  • Submission Impossible Presents Behind The Scenes: Referee Al Wichgers

In the world of combative sports there is always one person amongst the action that holds all the power. This person, who hopes to remain faceless and unnoticed throughout the fight, is the referee. Having refereed boxing and kickboxing for over 30 years and then becoming involved with the officiating of mixed martial arts in 1992, Wisconsin native Al Wichgers has become a recognizable face within the fight scene. But that doesn't mean he wants people to start talking about him. "The best thing you can say about a referee is nothing," Wichgers told US Combat Sports. "You are always going to be criticized because there is always someone that thinks you should have done y...
  • Representative Pat Strachota Looks To Enact Bill Giving Local Municipalities Opportunity to Outlaw Mixed Martial Arts

More than two years ago, in November of 2009, the Town of Polk created Ordinance 07-02, an act that at the time cancelled "ultimate or extreme fighting events" and gave the town the opportunity to deny a permit for any mixed martial arts promotion. Now, Patricia Strachota, the Representative of the 58th Assembly District, is currently seeking co-sponsors to extend the ordinance across the state allowing for all local municipalities the chance to keep the sport out of their areas.
  • Erik Koch Inches Closer to Title Shot with Victory Over Brookins, Who Will He Face Next?

Another impressive performance has put Erik Koch directly in the midst of the featherweight title picture. Routinely stuffing Jonathan Brookins' takedown attempts, Koch earned the unanimous decision on Saturday night on the main card of UFC Fight Night 25 in New Orleans. With his victory over The Ultimate Fighter season 12 champion Koch has now won four straight bouts, two of which have been inside the UFC, and finds himself right behind fellow 145-pounder Chad Mendes in line for a title bout.
  • Sam Alvey Drops Razor Thin Split Decision to Vitor Vianna at Bellator 50

It’s going to be tough to smile for Sam Alvey after his opening round split decision loss to Vitor Vianna at Bellator 50 in Florida on Saturday night. The Wisconsin native fought one of the smartest and most effective fights of his career utilizing his jab and looping right hand, yet it wasn’t enough for two of the judges. Vianna earned the split decision nod, mainly due to a strong second round, and became the first competitor to advance to the semifinals.
  • Sam Alvey Looks to Continue Trend and Become Wisconsin's Third Bellator Champion

Judging upon recent history the other seven participants within the upcoming Bellator middleweight tournament should be weary of "Smile'N" Sam Alvey. Alvey, who hails from Manitowoc, looks to follow in the paths of Ben Askren and Cole Konrad and become the next Wisconsin-born Bellator champion. But up first for Alvey is his toughest opponent to date, a second-degree black belt and the head Jiu-Jitsu instructor of Wand Fight Team, Vitor Vianna.
  • USCS Fight of the Week: Erik Koch and Jonathan Brookins Meet at UFC Fight Night 25 with Title Implications on the Line

Featherweights Erik Koch and Jonathan Brookins find themselves on a very short list of UFC title contenders. One, a rapidly rising human highlight reel from the Duke Roufus factory in Milwaukee, the other, a proven veteran with a TUF trophy on his mantle and a brand new set of fans eagerly awaiting his return to the cage. At Saturday's UFC Fight Night 25 event in New Orleans, Koch and Brookins meet in a highly intriguing matchup that could ultimately see one emerge as the 145-pound division's next title contender.

  • NAFC Unleashed Adds Two More Exciting Bouts, Bolsters an Already Impressive Lineup

November’s upcoming North American Fighting Championship “Unleashed” lineup is getting stronger on a daily basis. With the amount of mixed martial arts events in Wisconsin continually dwindling, the promotion has taken advantage of the area’s available resources and pitted a number of the top fighters against one another. Most recently, the organization announced a pair of competitive matchups via its Facebook page including a light heavyweight bout between Will Dicke and Karl Turek as well as an intriguing featherweight contest amongst Josh Kasee and Zach Underwood.
