Saturday night may have seen two of the finest performances ever in the North Texas MMA scene with an XKO event that rocked Arlington with a championship fight that saw Steven “OCHO” Peterson defend his belt by submitting a very game Alex “WARPATH” Russ. What does it means to be a female purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? My instructor, Gustavo Dantas, likes to say: “Once a person receives their purple belt, you really know they’re serious about Jiu-Jitsu.” I find this to be true many reasons and even more so for female practitioners. There is a reason why the number of competitors gets smaller as the belt gets darker. This is very apparent in the Women’s division. History will be made on July 30 when the Southwest's first ever Combat Sports Expo debuts at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, NM.Organized by the Combat Sports Club the event combines a Grappling tournament with performances and appearances from many of the Southwest's highest ranked trainers and fighters. Arrive early at 9:45 and see a Chinese Dragon Dance, a symbol of good luck, before the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu matches commence.
