Pat Curran Wins Featherweight Tournament and Nazare Enters Lightweight Field at Bellator 48
Tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, perennial Bellator competitor Pat Curran won his second tournament, this time claiming the Bellator 145 pound tournament final victory over Brazilian phenom Marlon Sandro with a show-stopping head kick knockout in the second round.
After being on the receiving end of a one sided striking clinic for the first round and a half, Curran got to showcase his knockout power. Curran pressed forward with a combination of straight punches, which Sandro easily ducked. But as Sandro dipped out of the way of the last punch, Curran finished the combination with a head kick that clipped Sandro and put him to the canvas.
At the post-fight press conference, Curran attributed his come back victory to his coaching staff.
"I definitely listened to my corners," He reminded me 'look low, go high.' As he was going back and forth, he was bobbing and weaving. His hand wasn't up and I saw that."
While the head kick that ended the bout was the highlight of the evening, Curran had lobbed several kicks at Sandro throughout the bout. Limping in to the press conference, Curran wore a wrap on his ankle due to the force of the clashing.
"I landed a couple of leg kicks and it started to hurt my ankle a little bit," Curran explained. "Then I landed a head kick that really irritated it. So, now I'm icing it.
The featherweight tournament marks the second Bellator bracket in two seasons that Curran has come out on top of. In season three, Curran won the 155 pound tournament and the chance to face Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.
As the featherweight tournament champion, Curran would normally be slated to face Bellator title holder Joe Warren for the organization's featherweight gold next season. However, an injury from the previous featherweight tournament champion, Patricio Freire, has set back the last scheduled title defense.
In addition, Warren has dropped down to 135 pounds to enter the Bellator bantamweight tournament starting next season, which further muddies the waters.
According to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, the timing of the featherweight title bouts will depend on how well Warren does in the tournament. Should Warren be eliminated early from the 135 pound tournament and Freire's recovery go as scheduled, Warren's first title defense can come as early the middle of the upcoming season five. The winner of that bout will, in turn, face Curran.
Another big winner of the evening was member of New York's own Team Bombsquad, Rene Nazare. Against tough scrapper Juanito Barrentes, Nazare dominated every aspect of the game on the way to a win via doctor's stoppage. The victory earned Nazare a spot in the Bellator lightweight tournament stable.
"We have huge hopes for [Nazare] in our lightweight division," said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. "It would be a pleasure to watch him in our next lightweight tournament in season six."
