The Best Fights You've Never Seen: Shinya Aoki vs. George Sotiropolous - April Fool's Edition
Fans of mixed martial arts all appreciate fights like Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar or Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Josh Barnett - grueling battles that test the technique, strength, and sheer resolve of both competitors. Some fans, this author included, also take a certain pleasure in fights aren't particularly good or bad, but are just plain funny. For April Fool's Day, we will take a look at one such match, where one fighter possessed such a dominant skillset that his opponent could do nothing but be utterly overwhelmed - until he unleashed an ancient and mysterious technique. The bout will also feature a semi-final tilt in the current welterweight tournament between Lyman Good and Rick Hawn. Superfight Between GSP and Silva Makes Perfect Sense, Especially for Fans
Yesterday, my colleague at USCS, Chris Gutmanis, wrote an editorial on why the match between UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and middleweight champion Anderson Silva should not be made. Below are my counterpoints to that article. See the original here. Without risk, there is no reward. So for Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, and fight fans across the world, a superfight between the current UFC's longest reigning champions makes perfect sense. Not to schedule the fight simply because it is too risky for either man's legacy is an insult to MMA fans everywhere. If a "Spider" vs. "Rush" match is not formulated, it would be a travesty. Dream matchup... -
Superfight Between Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre Makes No Sense
In the wake of Jon Jones' one-sided domination of Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua, fans present at UFC 128 immediately began buzzing with the thought of a super fight between the new light-heavyweight champion and longtime middleweight ruler Anderson Silva. Thankfully, this is nothing more than hype and talk at this point, for there are an abundance of challenges waiting for the new champion. -
The Best Fights You've Never Seen: Kotetsu Boku vs. Yukio Sakaguchi
In light of recent criticism over certain fighters in larger promotions 'point-fighting' in order to get safe wins and maintain their spot on an increasingly competitive and cutthroat roster, this week we will take a look at a particularly wild fight between one of MMA's most underrated strikers and a man who is incapable of producing an unexciting fight, win or lose. -
Texas Pick Em: UFC 128
Texas weighs in on the upcoming UFC light heavyweight bout between champion Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua and Jon 'Bones' Jones. Mike Calimbas (txmma.com): Tough one to analyze; too many variables in this fight! Bones Jones has to earn the type of respect I've already afforded to Rua. I'm going SHOGUN purely based on my reverence for his history and earned achievements! Josh 'Pool Boy' Smith (North Texas MMA): Jones. At anytime something that you haven't practiced for might be coming. Michael Wolman (USCombatSports.com):Hard to believe Jones is a Las Vegas favorite against the champion. Jones unorthodox striking and ability to get up at will is enoug... -

Shark Fights to attack in California, possibly Houston, Albuquerque Ever since their breakout event, Shark Fights 13 (which earned USCombatSports.com Fight Card of the Year honors), the Amarillo-based promotion has been on a roll. The Best Fights You've Never Seen: Yuka Tsuji vs. Ana Michelle Tavares
Ask a casual fan to name a female mixed martial artist, and you'll likely hear answers of Gina Carano or Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos. Serious followers of the sport could also likely list off the likes of Megumi Fujii, Sarah Kaufman, Miesha Tate, or Strikeforce 135-pound champion Marloes Coenen. Female mixed martial arts is slowly but steadily gaining attention within the sport, and this week's column will pay tribute to two of the all-time best female fighters in a fight that took place before any of today's stars had even stepped into the cage. -
Abu Dhabi Pro Trials: My Personal Experience
This past weekend I had the great opportunity to compete at what is becoming one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials. The Abu Dhabi Pro Trials started about three years ago and are held in areas across the world including Brazil, Japan, China and the United States. The trials draw many of the sport's top competitors who strive to win the ultimate prize, money, and an all-expenses-paid trip to fight in the U.A.E to test their skills against the rest of the world’s best grapplers. -
Shark Fight 14 Main Card Preview
In less than three years, the Amarillo, Texas-based Shark Fights has established itself as a major national draw, and this Friday's event, headlined by UFC-vets Matt Horwich and Danillo Villefort and broadcasting live on HDNet, is just one more reason why. Unfortunately, a compelling rematch between James Irvin and Houston Alexander collapsed when Irvin's tests from a fight in December came back positive for steroids. Instead, two of the most recognizable female fighters, Tara LaRosa and Carina Damm will consummate a grudge match in the co-main. Shark Fights 14's whopping 15-fight lineup should still provide an entertaining night, the results of which may resonate in the Oct...
