  • UFC 137: Nick Diaz Throws Away Shot of a Lifetime, Carlos Condit Fills in Against Georges St. Pierre

In the last month the east coast has experienced both an earthquake and a hurricane which led some to believe the end of the world was impending. Yesterday’s UFC press conference completely sold me on that ideology. Cue the music for Nick Diaz. The former Strikeforce welterweight champion had been given the opportunity of a lifetime to face off against Georges St. Pieree at UFC 137. Apparently, Diaz wasn't interested. The highly anticipated title bout was scrapped due to Diaz not cooperating with the UFC having failed to appear at two press conferences to promote the fight. Carlos Condit will now step into the life changing opportunity.
  • Anderson Silva Continues Division Dominance in UFC 134 Victory, Is There Anyone Left at 185?

When you think of greatness in sports names such as Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Joe Montana and Wayne Gretzky come to mind. Now, Anderson Silva should be added to that list. Having won the middleweight title in 2006 in just his second UFC fight, "The Spider" has never lost within the UFC and remains unstoppable in his quest for being the greatest fighter to ever live. Along with cruising through the middleweight ranks, “The Spider” has bitten the light heavyweight roster twice, dispatching of respectable journeyman James Irvin and a former champion Forrest Griffin.
  • UFC 134 Mid-Atlantic Pick'Em

This Saturday, the world's largest MMA organization makes its dramatic return to Brazil for UFC 134. The card, headlining middleweight champion and all time great Anderson Silva in a title defense against Yushin Okami, appears to be stacked in favor of the local boys. Below is the Mid-Atlantic staff picks for the event:
  • Yushin Okami: Is He Truly the Greatest Japanese Fighter of All Time?

It’s the bold statement that Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has repeatedly expressed that gets fans wondering. “If Yushin Okami beats Anderson Silva he is the greatest Japanese fighter of all time.” And while casual fans of the sport may be relatively unaware of the large 185-pound fighter with immeasurable strength, an outstanding record coupled with a true victory over the pound-for-pound greatest fighter of all time would certainly put him near the very top of White's hypothetical list.
  • The Problem With Self Defense: Superheroes Part 2

In the last installment of the Problem with Self Defense editorial series, I started to discuss the recent surge in discussion over the Real Life Superhero trend in New York. Last week, HBO aired a documentary called Superheroes following members of the recent phenomenon of private citizens dressing in costumes to engage in everything from from charity work to vigilante justice. Among the groups featured in the documentary is a make-shift team of Avengers who operate out of the New York boroughs known as the NY Initiative. In part one of this two part series*, I discussed the charity work and general positive side of these adventurous cosplayers. But the obvious problem with trying to be ...

  • Fighting as a Father: Walking Away on Top Shows Chris Lytle's Devotion to his Family

Chris Lytle's retirement from MMA could have only been more cliché had he done it on Father’s Day. "Lights Out" chose to walk away from the sport fans on top after his fight with Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy. And as a father, I understand why. Revealing that he wanted to spend more time with his family, the same way Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino did just months ago, Lytle did what nearly all before him have been unable to do in the sport of mixed martial arts - leave at the pinnacle of his career.
  • Bellator 48 to Close Season at Mohegan Sun

This Saturday, tournament style MMA promotion Bellator FC will cap off it's current season in Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, with Bellator 48. The card, headlined by the featherweight tournament final between Pat Curran and Marlon Sandro, is actually characterized by feature bouts meant to showcase fighters in the next set of tournaments. While Curran versus Sandro will officially bring season four to a close, the rest of Bellator 48 serves up an appetizer for season five, which is scheduled to commence September 10 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Below is a breakdown of some key bouts on the card:
  • UFC and Wisconsin: Knowledgable Fans, Title Contenders, and Harley-Davidson Partnership Point to Pay-Per-View Return

The first visit from Dana White and the Ultimate Fighting Championship into Wisconsin territory was undoubtedly a success. A raucous and intelligent fight crowd filled Milwaukee's Bradley Center for Chris Lytle's retirement celebration and showed why the state is considered one of the hotbeds of mixed martial arts, not only in terms of fighting talent, but also because of its residents love for the fight game. Bringing in 6,751 attendees and a $539,000 gate to the Bradley Center with the UFC on Versus 5 on Sunday night, Wisconsin made its case for another event in the near future – hopefully a pay-per-view.
  • New Pro Elite's Best Bet is on the Local Stage

Yesterday, Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting broke the news that the new iteration of MMA promotion company Pro Elite will be holding a show in New Jersey this November. Further, there are plans for the November show to include the start of its own Pro Elite Heavyweight Grand Prix, a tournament modeled after the recent Strikeforce Grand Prix, which in turn heralded back to the Pride era. Given that the former Pro Elite management, and their MMA product Elite XC, failed so spectacularly on the public stage in 2008, analysts and fans have been highly skeptical of the defunct company's reappearance.
