The list of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts within Wisconsin continues to grow. Two weeks ago, Monkey Bar Gymnasium head instructor Thales Blaso received the prestigious honor from teachers Luiz Claudio and Thiago Veiga while on a trip to Brazil.
This month’s USCombatSports.com Open Mat has been postponed until a later date. Originally scheduled to take place at the Chosen Few Gym on September 11, the Madison-based grappling session will be on hold until at least October.
It is neither fame nor fortune that drives Gerald Meerschaert into the gym each day. Rather, “The Machine” is motivated to continually improve in order to defy his naysayers, something that he is expecting to do against Sam Alvey in the Combat USA middleweight tournament finale.

The puzzle that is the Bellator 29 lineup remains to be solved. However, USCombatSports.com has learned that one of the night’s bouts will pit WEC veterans Jameel “The Real Deal” Massouh and Kyle Dietz against one another.
A new chapter of mixed martial arts is now upon us Wisconsin. Beginning sharply on September 1, 2010, a list of restrictions and regulations recently drafted by an advisory committee appointed by the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing will serve as the Magna Carta for MMA here in the Badger state.
Accompanied by a legion of loyal fans, a never-say-die mentality, and an undeniable amount of talent, Sam Alvey has become one of the most marketable and popular fighters within Wisconsin. And if “Smile’N Sam” is successful against Gerald Meerschaert in two weeks, he will likely have earned the chance to shine on a grander stage.
