Co-run and operated by Mike Perleberg and Jason Steel, Steel Fist will rely on previous promotional and combative training experience to head their new organization in the right direction.
“I’ve done some boxing in the past,” said Perleberg. “Besides that, most of my experience comes from the promotional side of the business of booking bands and such. Me and Jason (Steel) are huge advocates of MMA, and we sat down and decided it was time to put this thing together.”
Steel, who has trained out of Adrian Serrano’s Combat Sports Gym, said that their knowledge and relationships within the business have allowed them to create a promotion that should be able to thrive.
“We were able to put a fight card together with 23 fights, 12 of which are going to be professional,” said Steel. “With all the people we are associated with, we knew that we could all put it together and put on a show that Wisconsin hasn’t seen.”
Alongside Perleberg and Steel, Steel Fist matchmaker Bill “Shark” Finn has been hard at work putting together a solid card. One of his strongest signings was headliner Rich “No Love” Clementi who will meet Lenny “Smash” Nelson in the main event.
“One of the things that gets us excited about this event is that Rich Clementi is coming,” said Perleberg. “He’s a big name fighter that really gets the fans excited…it’s great to see people get excited about the same things that we are getting excited about.”
Yearlong Process
Looking further than Saturday’s show, Steel Fist also announced that they have signed a six-fight, yearlong contract with The Rave beginning on July 31. Both Perleberg and Steel said that Milwaukee should get ready for some top-notch MMA.
“Our goal is that each show will have a well-known name on the card, whether it’s from the UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, Bellator or a really high class local fighter. We want to capture the wow-factor. When you walk into the ballroom, you get to see a great show in a great atmosphere.”
With the first event not yet under their belt, the big picture is still blurry for the Milwaukee-based promotion. However, the first six shows should be a telltale sign as to how big the company can grow.
“If I can get through six fights with everyone having a great time, still getting high-caliber fighters, and we’re still getting our name out there, the sky is the limit,” said Perleberg. “I can’t sit here and tell you that we’re going to be as big as the UFC or as small as just a local show, but we just don’t know yet.”
Cooperation Breeds Success
Entering into a business where fellow promoters can be very territorial, Steel Fist Entertainment made it evident that they look forward to working alongside the other Wisconsin-based organizations.
“We want to work hand-in-hand with guys like Duke Roufus, Pat O’Malley, and Combat USA,” said Perleberg. “Also, if there is smaller companies that still want to do shows, we are here to help the smaller guys keep going. We’re not just looking to take care of ourselves, because in this sport, if everybody quits you’re not going to fighters.
“Ideally I’d like to take a bunch of guys (promotions), put them together, and make it one big happy group of guys. You can have Bill (Finn) in Edgerton and Madison, we have it in Milwaukee, and maybe go up north to Green Bay or something. When the regulations come out, who knows who is going to be around and who is going to fold, and I don’t want to see anybody fold. So if there is something we can do to help out any gym or promotion, give us a call. We’re not just about us, we want MMA to be around for a long time.”
In less than a week, Steel Fist Entertainment will make its first impression on MMA fans throughout Wisconsin. And Mike Perleberg and Jason Steel want to make sure that every intrigued person gets an opportunity to see the action.
“We’re here for the fans and to appreciate our customers. General admission tickets are only $30, but if people really want to come, but can’t afford tickets, give me a call and I’ll see you a ticket for $10. Our goal is to be number one with the fans, number one with the commission, and number one with all of the other promotions around the state.”
