If you needed your mixed martial arts fill last Saturday night, you surely would have gotten it at the Who’s Next Combat Championships, which delivered 25 bouts to the Fond du Lac Fairgrounds crowd. Chuck Hoskins showed his quickness by taking out Adam Kope on a sneaky counterpunch, and Derek Verburgt looked solid in a win over Bill Finn.
Looking to put together a second consecutive victory after dismantling Ron Gordon at WNCC 3, Chuck “Diesel” Hoskins (2-0) was far from able to simply walk through Adam Kope. Kope controlled much of the action early, working his clinch game up against the cage wall and keeping Hoskins at bay. After the two separated back to the center of the WNCC steel, Kope landed a nice spinning backfist that appeared to catch “Diesel” off guard.
Keeping his wits about him though, Hoskins shuffled around the mat waiting for Kope to make a mistake and leave an opening. When he did, the Scorpions Alliance competitor pounced, connecting with a good shot that put Kope down to the canvas. A few more added shots on the ground sealed the deal. The heavyweight battle earned the Wisconsin Combat Sports Fight of the Night.
In the co-main event, Bill “The Shark” Finn and Derek Verburgt squared off in a lightweight contest. Verburgt pressed the issue to begin the bout, clearly setting himself up as the aggressor. Finn stumbled backward after catching a right hand to the chin, but was able to retreat enough in order to find time to recover. The second frame carried a similar theme, as Verburgt pushed forward, eventually getting a nice takedown into half guard. Moving to full mount, Verburgt forced Finn to give up his back, and with that he was able to sink in the rear naked choke at 2:32 of the second round.
The last of the night’s three professional matchups was dominated by Gary “Bad Boy” Bivens, who put Alessio Ziel down to the mat early and often. Staying on him continuously throughout the first round, Bivens did much of the same in the second, again getting a takedown and looking to finish via some good strikes. But it would ultimately be an arm triangle choke that lent itself to Bivens, who cinched it tight at 4:33 and also grabbed the Wisconsin Combat Sports Submission of the Night.
In terms of the Wisconsin Combat Sports Knockout of the Night, that came much earlier from an undercard battle between Josh Nowicki and James Erickson. Nowicki stormed out of his corner to begin the bout, and was relentless with punches flying from every angle. Eventually, a few connected, and Erickson was overwhelmed, forcing the referee to step in and stop it at 1:29 of the very first round.
Other TKO victories came from Andy Noble over Mike Pagelsdorf by way of some repeated hammerfists; Jason Tunks getting a “W” against Trevor Konetzke after securing back position and raining down shots; and Brandon Mason needing just 20 seconds to defeat Micah Fulton.
In addition to a good crowd turnout, the gentlemen from Combat USA were on-hand recording some footage for their television program. UFC veterans Eric Schafer and Ron Faircloth were also in attendance.
