What was setup to be a top-notch battle at 145 pounds Saturday night ended with a quick mistake and beautiful submission, as Brian Learn took care of Jimmy Zidek to cap off a terrific evening of fights at CCC VI: Throwdown at Tanner’s. The co-main event ended in similar fashion, with Gary Givens snatching up a guillotine choke to finish David White.
Despite not receiving a physical belt for his efforts, Brian Learn at the very least earned the title as the new featherweight champion of the Caged Conflict Championships. Learn (10-7-1) was pitted against a slimmer, revamped Jimmy “Daywalker” Zidek (3-4) who most recently earned a solid win over Seth “El Nino” Marquez.
But it was the fighter from Superior who ultimately was superior, despite an early head kick attempt that landed him on his back. With Zidek on top in full guard, he managed to get in too close leaving himself vulnerable to a triangle choke, which is exactly what Learn executed perfectly. After 20 or so seconds of cinching the submission tighter and pulling down on Zidek’s head, Learn alerted the referee that Zidek was indeed weakly tapping and the fight was halted at 52 seconds of round one. The prompt and punctual triangle also gave Learn Wisconsin Combat Sports Submission of the Night honors.
A late addition to the card, a welterweight scrap between Gary Bivens (1-0) and David White also exemplified how quickly a mixed martial arts contest can come to an end. A brutal takedown early by Givens allowed him to control much of the opening round, as he continually stayed in dominant position and avoided White’s submission attempts from the bottom.
Beginning round two with a spinning back heel kick, Givens appeared to injure himself as he reeled back from his opponent, limping around the outside of the cage and grabbing down at his knee. Choosing to fight on however, he secured another takedown, and quickly moved to side control, putting White in a crucifix position. Absorbing some big shots from Givens, White rolled out the back door, but was visibly fatigued as he laid flat against the mat after escaping. This gave the Scorpions Alliance fighter enough of an opening to jump on top and snatch up a deep guillotine choke. Two minutes into the second round secured his first professional MMA win, and with it garnered Wisconsin Combat Sports’ Fight of the Night.
Regarded as a super-heavyweight matchup, Ron Gordon and Kyle Fink met to spray the Tanner’s crowd with blood. After an early feeling out process, Gordon connected with a right that sent Fink down to the canvas. Able to grab hold of a leg and survive, Fink battled his way back into an even standup fight. Bleeding heavily from the nose, Fink took another few punches on the chin, and was again sent to the ground. This time Gordon finished, requiring a referee stoppage at 3:27 of the opening frame.
In one of two potentially controversial endings on the night, Davarius Scaife ended Jeremy Hemmrick just 40 seconds into their lightweight bout. A quick takedown turned into Scaife unloading on Hemmrick, but ended the flurry with an abbreviated knee to the head of Hemmrick, who was grounded. Despite the illegal blow, it was determined the Rising Son competitor was no longer able to defend himself, a Scaife walked away with the “W”.
The other came in correlation with one of the fastest knockouts Wisconsin MMA has seen, not to mention it broke the CCC record for speediest fight finish. Tim Immel came out of the bell looking to shoot for a takedown early on Shawn Cunningham, and wound up diving directly into a rising knee, instantly putting him out cold. Whether inadvertent, accidental or lucky, Cunningham got the job done in just seven seconds.
But despite the brevity of Cunningham-Immel, House of Pride’s Matt Dain collected the Wisconsin Combat Sports Knockout of the Night in a mid-undercard contest. Landing spot on with one gigantic right, Dain put Casey Bolchen to the mat, and walked away with a win after 39 seconds.
Fans of the striking aspect of mixed martial arts were treated, as more than half of the 16 bouts ended by way of knockout, TKO, or tapout due to strikes.
Travis Fischer also announced prior to the main event that the Caged Conflict Championships would return to Tanner’s in Kimberly on May 1st, as well as a return visit sometime soon to Oshkosh.
