  • UFC-WEC merger poses problem for smaller fighters

    Yesterday afternoon, the UFC announced a merger with their sister promotion, the WEC. When World Extreme Cagefighting was first acquired by UFC parent company Zuffa Entertainment, the WEC was turned into a feeder league for the UFC. But marketing complications with running one promotion purely in subservience to another quickly changed the role of the WEC to “UFC light,” where the WEC disbanded redundant weight classes in favor of primarily featuring the smaller fighters that the UFC would not host. Now with the WEC gone and the fighters within it only performing on UFC shows, the most important role that the WEC served will become more visible in its absence.
