The Adventures of Shama Ko: Gracie Tijuca -- filling in the cracks
I know it's silly to get nervous about training at a new academy, but I do. Regardless of how many schools I've trained at over the years throughout the States, when I am the "new kid in school", I still get a bit anxious about my first day of class like a five-year-old kid. I'd been corresponding with Vini Aieta of Gracie Tijuca and Francis of Rio Sports Tours for a few months. So, when I walked in the door I was greeted with warm smiles and kisses on each cheek. My first day of class was part of the Rio Sports Tours Vini Aieta's Jiu Jitsu camp. We went over two to three different techniques and then it was time for "training" (rolling). King Mo says he's a champ, not a prospect
Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal is considered by most to be a rising star in the sport, a top prospect. He doesn't see himself that way. "I don't think you can call me an up and comer anymore," Lawal said. People can say that based on my time in the sport, but it makes no sense to call me a prospect. I'm a world champion. If I am a prospect, then that means Brock Lesnar is a prospect. He has only been fighting a year longer than me." On Saturday, Aug. 21 in Houston, Lawal will have another opportunity to show just how far along he is. -

Did Anderson Silva revolutionize MMA at UFC 117?
In the nineties, MMA was a war of styles. Now that the game is more finely-tuned, it's a battle of trends. The stories and reviews have all credited Anderson Silva's black belt in jiu jitsu for his fight-winning, 'Hail Mary' triangle choke in his seventh title defense on Saturday. Yet, during the twenty-or-so minutes that the champion was lying on his back getting pulverized and humbled (actually, we'll see about that one) by Chael Sonnen, Silva attempted that same hold multiple times. It wasn't until the final round that Silva, with Sonnen in his guard, stuck the challenger in the face with a stiff punch. Sonnen, already lacerated and bleeding from an eariler s... -
