MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA - The Alabama Athletic Commission will officially begin accepting license applications for mixed martial arts on November 1, 2011.

The decision by the Alabama Athletic Commission to start licensing professional mixed martial arts promoters and amateur MMA sanctioning organizations comes after the "Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts Act" was signed into law in February 2010, allowing the state to oversee MMA.

Although promoting an MMA event became legal with the governor’s signature, regulatory guidelines had to be in place before licenses could be issued. The law states that promoting an MMA event without a license is a class C felony.

Throughout 76 minutes and 47 seconds inside the cage as a professional mixed martial artist Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren has rarely been in danger.

Other than a Hail Mary triangle attempt from Lyman Good in the final seconds of their Bellator 33 title bout, the Milwaukee-based fighter has looked nearly unstoppable since transitioning from the wrestling mat.

And while Askren remains undefeated with victories over veterans Nick Thompson, Lyman Good, and Dan Hornbuckle, tomorrow's championship bout against Bellator's Season 4 welterweight tournament winner Jay Hieron should showcase how the former Olympian will fare against the sport's top welterweights.

Yet another shakeup has hit the ProElite 2 main event. After Pedro Rizzo pulled out of the Nov. 5 fight against Tim Sylvia due to injury Rizzo’s replacement Andreas Kraniotakes has reportedly been denied a fighter license by the Illinois State Professional Athletic Commission.

Dana White and the Ultimate Fighting Championship are sitting directly on the doorstep of mainstream acceptance. With the nationally televised heavyweight championship fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos just around the corner the organization has leaked a trailer poised to get hardcore fight fans salivating and at least capture the attention of everyone else.

The biggest opportunity of Floyd Hodges’ career is just around the corner. The streaky Wisconsin fighter has agreed to face off against four-time UFC veteran Waylon Lowe at "ProElite 2: Sylvia vs. Kraniotakes" in Moline, Illinois on November 5.

An obvious clash of styles, the free-swinging Hodges has once again been matched up with a proven wrestler. Lowe, a three-time NCAA national champion at the University of Findlay, possesses the skill set that has given Hodges fits throughout his career.
