NCAA Wrestling Championships: Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State Facing St. John of Iowa in Semi-Finals
Des Moines, IA- Alex Dieringer wrestling out of Oklahoma State advances to the semi-finals of the NCAA National Wrestling Championships. The Red-shirt freshman entered the tournament with a sixth seed in the 157-pound weight class. In the semi-finals he will wrestle the number two seed Derek St. John of Iowa.
Dieringer hails from Port Washington, Wisconsin, where he won two Wisconsin state titles in 2007 at 103 and in 2009 at 140, as well as finishing runner-up in 2008 at 125-pounds. He wrestled at Port Washington High school under Head Coach Angelo LaRossa.
The Cowboy wrestled in open tournaments during his redshirted season compiling a record of 17-1. During this season he put together an impressive 32-2 record, earning a sixth seed in the NCAA national tournament.
In the first round of the tournament he majored Michigan State’s Ryan Watts by a score of 9-1. Round two Dieringer earned another major decision over his opponent Spartak Chino of Ohio with a nine to zero victory.
The quarterfinals were a tougher round for Alex Dieringer after his opponent of Boise State earned an early takedown. After a quick escape, he went on to earn two take downs and another escape in the match to win 6-4.
In the Semi-Finals, Dieringer will battle against foe Derek St. John who has beaten him earlier in the season by a score of 8-4. St. John entered the tournament with a record of 28-2 and the second seed. Expect a war between these two wrestlers as both teams (Iowa and Oklahoma State) are fighting for potential team title.
