Evolution 2: Brothers Collide as Paco Castillo Earns Split Decision Over Angel Castillo
Evolution Combat Sports Championship took sibling rivalry to a new level on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Curry County Event Center as brothers Paco and Angel Castillo were pitted against one another in the main event of Evolution 2.
But the bad blood that had built leading to the fight was erased following a spectacular split decision that showcased every aspect of mixed martial arts.
As the night’s main event began both fighters took the center of the cage and hurled rapid fire haymakers and roundhouse kicks until a takedown had them both off their feet flying through the air.
On the ground Angel threatened with the first of several submission attempts. He had Paco caught twice in triangle chokes, an armbar, and two guillotines but was unable to finish any of them. On their feet Paco dominated the stand up landing heavy punches and kicks though Angel caught him often with a pinpoint jab as well as a few flush head kicks.
In the second round Paco lifted Angel overhead and power slammed him to the canvas, a feat he’d repeat in third. Somewhere in the frenetic pace of strikes, scrambles and submissions in the second round Paco delivered an illegal head kick to a kneeling Angel which nearly stopped the fight, and cost Paco a point deduction. Angel bravely pushed on and finished strong, though on bottom, but it was Paco who got the judges nod by split decision.
“Angel won this fight” Paco asserted in the post fight interview, “I love my little brother, he’s a bad ass” he added, as Angel hoisted him up in victory.
In the co-main Adrian Cruz showed power and polish in TKOing a very tough Gilbert Cuhen. Prior, Evolution Matchmaker Eric Kucevic shaked off six years of cage rust to face Brad Nordquist, a veteran of over 40 MMA fights. Nordquist won by RNC in the second.· The final Pro fight was a BJJ clinic put on by Brazilian Daniel Pinheiro who defeated Filiberto Martinez by RNC early in the first.
