Bellator 48 Live Results and Play By Play Coverage
Tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, Bellator will bring its fourth season to a close with the end of their featherweight tournament. Below are the results and round by round breakdown of the evening's bouts:
Saul Almeida def. Tateki Matsuda via unanimous decision
Round 1: Matsuda gives up a visible reach advantage to the Brazilian. Almeida tries to use this advantage early, working the outside with leg kicks. The two start exchanging leg kicks one for one before Almeida gets tired of it and tries to punch his way in. Almeida is staying on the outside but is getting beaten in the exchanges in spite of his reach advantage. Almeida now charges forward and presses his man into the cage. Matsuda is getting battered by knees against the wall but is avoiding the takedown. Eventually Matsuda turns around and gets the break. From the outside, Matsuda starts ducking shots and landing hard counter hooks. Almeida tries a desperation shot but gets sprawled out on and kneed to the body for his trouble. The two scramble back to their feet. Just as Almeida is starting to look outclassed he scores a perfect outside reap takedown directly into side control. Matsuda works his way into a turtle. Almeida goes for his man's back but Matsuda reverses it into a double leg. Almeida does a quick scramble after the takedown and finishes the round on Matsuda's back.
The first round began dominant by one fighter and finished dominant with another. 10-10 score, so far.
Round 2: Matsuda charges out with a flying knee. The theatrics don't work and the two go back to exchanging kicks like they did in the beginning of the first. Still fighting very even, Almeida shoots in and scores a double leg. Matsuda quickly recovers half guard. Then he uses to the fence to get full guard. Matsuda pushes away and tries to force a scramble but once again gives up his back. Matsuda gets his legs between Almeida's, turns in, gets and underhook and returns to his feet. Unrelenting, Almeida switches right to a single leg and once again takes Matsuda down and takes his back. Matsuda slowly starting to shake Almeida off but can't seem to escape. Almeida solidifies his position and gets the body lock, but can't complete the choke before the bell.
20-19 in Almeida's favor.
Round 3: This time Almeida shoots directly in, not wasting time with the standing game. Almeida scores the takedown and ends up in Matsuda's guard, raining down strikes. Matsuda is good at playing defense but can't seem to do more than maintain guard. Almeida eventually passes his way to half guard. Again, Matsuda is making himself a hard target but not making any offensive headway. Matsuda finally sits up in guard and once again scrambles into a takedown. Now Matsuda is sitting in Almeida's guard, which appears to be a much more dangerous place. Almeida threatens several submissions. Matsuda tries to pass but gets swept. Almeida once again makes his way to Matsuda's back and starts working. Overanxious, Almeida rides too high and lets Matsuda out the back. Matsuda finishes on top but doesn't do much damage.
30-28 for Almeida.
Ryan Quinn def. Brett Oteri 1:49 of round one via technical submission (rear naked choke)
Round 1: Quinn shoots in immediately and ends up in Oteri's guard. Oteri plays lock down. When he actually tries to move Quinn passes easily to North South. Oteri recovers guard and attempts an ineffectual guillotine before getting passed again and giving up his back. Quinn goes for the rear naked choke and Oteri is out.Andrew Calandrelli def. Matt Nice 3:55 of round one via submission (Americana)
Round 1: Nice starts throwing some probing jabs from pretty far out of range. Obviously looking to keep the much thicket Calandrelli at bay. Calandrelli seems tentative to engage, is feinting a lot but throwing very rarely. Calandrelli scores first flush shot, landing a counter hook. Nice now putting some combinations together. He has more than a little pop in those punches but they don't seem to phase Calandrelli. Andrew now lands another big counter shot. Nice is hurt and his defense is faltering. Calandrelli lands another big hook and Nice shoots in in desperation. Calandrelli pummels in and scores a takedown into side control. From there he starts to crank a keylock. Nice waits painfully long, but finally taps.
Nik Fekete def. Mark Griffin 3:12 of round two via TKO (unanswered strikes)
Round 1: Griffen takes the center of the cage and starts throwing probing punches. Fekete steps in and gets lit up for his trouble. Griffen [ounces on his fleeing opponent but gets taken down for his trouble. After some time with no real offense, Griffen wall walks back to his feet and gets his distance. Griffen again starts to work the outside, but Fekete charges in, gets the clinch, and starts throwing knees. Fekete maneuver's his man to the cage then shoots for a double, dragging him to the ground. Griffen now against the cage with his back almost taken, eating knees and trying to defend. Griffen moves to escape and Fekete takes him down, again. Fekete stands up in his opponent's guard and starts throwing. Griffen recovers half guard, then full, but Fekete stands up again and tries to rain death from above. To Griffen's credit, he has avoided the majority of damage Fekete tried to lay out, but Fekete still wins the round.
10-9 Fekete.
Round 2: Griffen has a little less pepper in his punches in round two, but still puts pressure on Fekete. Fekete responds with one of the slowest straight rights to ever actually land. Now Fekete gets serious, shooting for a single leg and converting to a body lock. He misses the takedown but gets Griffen against the cage and starts riding him from the body lock. Fekete now moves to Griffen's back and pulls him to the floor from behind. Fekete now in half guard against the cage starts pounding on Griffen. He converts to a mounted crucifix and Griffen is in serious trouble. After a hail of elbows, the referee calls it for Fekete.
Jeff Nader def. Dan Cramer 1:04 of round three via TKO
Round 1: Nader takes a low stance and starts stalking in. Cramer backs up initially, then charges in for the clinch. Nader turns him around and puts him against the fence. Nader goes for a takedown but gets caught in the plum clinch. Cramer snaps his man's neck down so hard he brings him to the ground. From Nader's guard, Cramer starts laying down punches. Nader just covering up and taking a beating. Ref watching closely but not stopping it. Cramer relents temporarily to avoid punching himself out. Even with the break, Nader is just laying down and taking a beating. Cramer easily passes to half guard, then resumes striking. Nader has literally been a punching bag for the entire round.
10-8 Cramer.
Round 2: Cramer comes in heavy, sensing weakness. Nader scores the takedown on his overanxious opponent. Cramer quickly sweeps and ends up back on top, in guard. Cramer resumes his performance from round one and Nader plays dead hoping he will lose interest. Cramer still raining elbows but not quick enough to be a finisher. Cramer attempts to pass, then says to hell with it and continues to throw. Finally, Cramer passes to mount against his opponent. Nader quickly recovers half guard and then curls up again into a dead defensive position, seemingly determined to lose by a maximum number of points. Cramer again passes to side control as the round ends.
20-16 Cramer
Round 3: Cramer punches his way in but gets turned into the cage. Nader backs away, huffing and puffing, then turns Cramer in again. Nader comes out throwing overhand after overhand and landing all of them. Cramer, staggers and appears to go out after a big uppercut. The referee steps in, pushes Nader over, Nader collapses and is declared the winner by knockout.
Rene Nazare def. Juan Barrantes via doctor's stoppage between rounds two and three
Round 1: Nazare comes out the aggressor with a number of outside strikes. Juanito lands a few counters but as the volume keeps coming Nazare keeps landing to his face. A quick head kick stumbles Barrantes and the two clinch. After a few knees, they break and Nazare continues to strike and strike hard. Barrantes is swinging but gettging cut to pieces, blood streaming down his face. Barrantes once again clinches and starts to throw knees, but gives up a big takedown to Nazare. Now inside his opponent's guard, Nazare starts swinging. Barrantes is doing all he can to push off and get away, but just ends up allowing Nazare to pass into side control. Barrantes is wearing a mask of blood, throwing up Hail Mary submission and getting shoved back down for more punishment. Now from half guard, Barrantes tries to walk up the wall. Nazare is on him like glue and tries to lock up the D'Arce, but Juanito will survive to round two.
10-9 Nazare
Round 2: Nazare stalks in. Barrantes not only does a better job of defending strikes, but lands some hard counter shots in the first exchange. Nazare now chopping at Barrantes' leg. Barrantes tries to counter attack and gets taken down. Nazare passes to half guard and starts dropping elbows. Juanito's face is not looking pretty but he seems to still be able to see and breathe. Barrantes begins to make a frame and try to escape out but gets put back down to the canvas. Barrantes does a quick turn and gets an improbable sweep, but Nazare follows him up and puts his man on the floor. Nazare lands some big punches against the wall. Barrantes tries to jump into a guillotine as Nazare presses foward, but just ends up on his back, eating more punches.
20-18 Nazare
Round 3: Juanito's eye closes in between rounds and the doctor calls it before the fight can continue to round three.
Seth Petruzelli def. Ricco Rodriguez 4:21 of round one via TKO
Round 1: Some getting to know you in the beginning. Ricco is dipping and throwing a few strikes. He tries to charge in but Petruzelli shrugs him aside. Petruzelli throws a spinning back kick just as Ricco throws and round kick and gets hit square in the cup. Ricco takes his time to recover. After the restart Petruzelli starts sizing up some low kicks. Ricco throws a kick and gets pushed over into a butterfly guard. Petruzelli breaks away and stands up. Seth lands a quick kick to Ricco's face, but that doesn't phase him much. With Ricco offering literally resistance, Petruzelli starts getting more brazen with his offense. Seth stumbles Ricco with a low kick and then tries to pounce, but gets turned around and pressed against the cage. Ricco starts landing some low knees, then one to the face as Seth breaks away. Petruzelli looks crisper in the exchanges but Ricco has definitely started to land. A spinning back kick by Petruzelli sends him reeling. Then another wheel kick to the face. Petruzelli then lands a quick right that drops Ricco, and he pounces for the kill.
Cole Konrad def. Paul Buentello via unanimous decision
Round 1: Konrad lands a hard jab that snaps Buentello's head back. Buentello tries to return fire but can't seem to find his range. Konrad starts working a few leg kicks, but Buentello is mostly just dancing away. Buentello seems tentative towards engaging, and hasn't made any attempt at a series offense. Konrad lands a glancing uppercut amidst a flurry. Now Buentello comes in with a flurry, but circles away without pressing. Konrad trying to press the action with strikes but he's clearly not built to chase down Buentello like this.Round ends to the boos of the crowd.
10-9 Konrad.
Round 2: Buentello showing a little more initiative but still not landing anything. Konrad trying to press the action but now slowing down. Buentello now timing Konrad's jabs to try and land his own. Konrad still agressing but not landing anything huge. Konrad finally moves in to clinch, but Buentello spins off the cage and gets away. Crowd is starting to get antsy. Konrad pushes the pace and starts landing against the cage, but Buentello once again escapes without serious damage.
20-18 Konrad.
Round 3: Buentello again swinging a little harder, but not doing a lot of damage. Perhaps he was waiting for Konrad, out of his element, to slow down. Buentello rushes in with strikes and gets tossed aside. Konrad takes his man's back and turns over for the choke. Buentello escapes and tries to crawl to the fence with Konrad heavy on top of him. Konrad turns him around and starts to punch from inside half guard. Buentello holds a lock down and takes short shots. The referee moves in to reset. Buentello starts throwing like he means it on the reset. Coming in he ends up landing a hard uppercut on Konrad. The comeback is too little, too late, however.
30-27 Konrad.
Pat Curran def. Marlon Sandro 4:00 of round two via knockout
Round 1: Curran starts playing keep away with teeps. Sandro trying to put punches together. Lands a hard kick to curran's leg. Sandro having a little trouble finding his range. Flying knee by Curran doesn't land solid. One of Curran's teeps checks Sandro's cup. Sandro lands a big lead hook in a flurry, but Curran shakes it off. Sandro is definitely the busier fighter but he hasn't landed anything to really set his offense off. Curran getting his lead leg chopped at. This could have some negative effects in the later rounds. Sandro mixing in scooping kicks with his normal round kicks. It's a popular trick amongst the Thais but it doesn't seem to be working, here. Curran is doing well avoiding the majority of the strikes but needs to counter if he wants to score points. Sandro finishes busier but doesn't land clean.
10-9 Sandro
Round 2: Curran throwing more in the flurries but neither man has landed anything solid. Curran now chopping at the lead leg of Sandro. Sandro now looping some big punches, both overhands and uppercuts, trying to land a damaging blow. One overhand only grazes by but still manages to draw Curran's blood. In another flurry they tie up and Curran puts Sandro against the cage. Sandro breaks away. Another flurry by sandro and this time a straight shot gets through. Sandro now snapping Curran's head back with jabs. Curran trying to restablish the teep to keep Sandro at bay. Sandro now mixing in shots to the body. Curran throws a combination ending with a head kick that knocks Sandro out cold.
