NAFC "Kickboxing Gladiators" Kicks Off UFC Weekend in Style, Camus, Weickhardt, Pettis, and Martinez on Card
While the focus of the weekend may be centered upon Dana White and the visit from the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Sunday, the North American Fighting Championship is hoping to capitalize on the momentum with a star-studded kickboxing event a night earlier.
Hosted inside Milwaukee Harley-Davidson's showroom, NAFC's "Kickboxing Gladiators" is set to feature 18 intense bouts including top-notch strikers such as Chico Camus, Kyle Weickhardt, Paul Martinez, and the professional debut of Sergio "The Phenom" Pettis.
Headlining the card, which is packed with seven professional Muay Thai bouts, will be a featherweight main event between UFC hopeful Chico "King" Camus and longtime kickboxing veteran Bill "Shark" Finn.
With a mixed martial arts record of 8-2, Camus has emerged as one of Wisconsin's most feared strikers. Relying on his heavy hands, the Roufusport fighter has defeated respectable opponents such as Joe Pearson and John Hosman over the past year. On Saturday, Camus will meet experienced kickboxing veteran Finn in a battle between two game competitors.
Weickhardt Wages War with Wonch
Considered by many as the area's top kickboxing talent, Bellator veteran Kyle "Wicked" Weickhardt is set to square off against Hamilton Muay Thai fighter Donald Wonch.
Before making the transition to mixed martial arts because of the increased career advancement possibilities, Weickhardt had his hopes set on being the world's best K-1 fighter.
"My goal was always to get into K-1 and be a really good kickboxer so I always wanted to be a standup fighter and really had no interest in MMA," he told US Combat Sports earlier this year. "But I eventually realized there was no future in kickboxing so my coaches told me either hand it up and do something else or make the transition into MMA."
However, with the added costs of hosting an MMA event since regulation went into effect, kickboxing has seen a rapid increase within Wisconsin. "Wicked" returns to his fighting roots on Saturday night against Wonch.
Pettis Makes Pro Debut Against Hodges
In what may be the most exciting fight of the night, fast-rising prospect Sergio Pettis has agreed to face the heavy-handed Floyd Hodges. Both fighters have been in the public eye for sometime now and could steal the show on Saturday.
Pettis, who will be making his professional mixed martial arts debut later this year, is jumping into the fight world headfirst against Hodges. "The Hitman" is 7-4 as a professional fighter with six of his victories coming via his dangerous hands.
While Hodges is a proven veteran the career of Pettis is just about to get underway. The younger brother of former WEC champion Anthony Pettis, "The Phenom" has shown a scary amount of potential as an amateur and looks to solidify the hype against his Fearless MMA opponent.
Also on the schedule for Saturday night are four other professional matchups. Heavyweight fan favorite Paul "Big Papi" Martinez makes his fighting return against Austin Ware, "Bam Bam" Bryce Franck meets Ryan Murray, Joe Nicols faces Dale Bennett, and Tom Grimmer squares off against Benny "The Albanian Jet" Izairi.
Showcasing a number of Wisconsin's top strikers on the card, NAFC "Kickboxing Gladiators" looks to take advantage of the UFC's visit with an intriguing event. Fans interested in scouting some of the state's top prospects shouldn't miss this one.
