Mathis Knocks Out Holm to Gain IBA and WBAN Welterweight Belts
The audience at Fresquez Productions’ “World Dominance” was stunned when, for the first time in over seven years, Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (30-2-3) lost to the very powerful Frenchwoman, Anne Sophie-Mathis (26-1), who has not lost since 1995. A nearly sold-old crowd was in attendance to witness this upset, on Friday, December 2, at Route 66 Casino Hotel, just west of Albuquerque, NM.
The match began with both dancing around, until Holm struck with an overhand right and an uppercut; Mathis answered with a solid left hook, and the fight was on. Holm’s style of stick-and-move, dancing away at angles, was neutralized, as Mathis, with her height and reach advantage, used that long stance to cut her off repeatedly, forcing Holm to blast inside with hook and body combinations.
The first four rounds saw even exchanges, but by the fifth round, the power of Mathis’ long-armed jabs and uppercuts rocked Holm’s head back, and she began to stagger. In the sixth round, Mathis scored a knockdown, and the moment the referee finished the 8-count, she ran back in to try and finish Holm, who barely made it to the end of the round.
The seventh round saw Holm repeatedly struck in the head, staggering around, until one hook knocked her back into the ropes, where her arm got tangled and she was essentially unconscious standing-up. When the referree did not call the fight, Mathis swooped back in and knocked Holm down, and this time, she did not get up.
Mathis won the fight by knock-out at 1:38 of the seventh round. Europe’s number-one Welterweight, Mathis has now added IBA and WBAN Welterweight Champion to her titles.
Josh “Pitbull” Torres (6-1-1 of Team Tapia) defeated Joel “Pirata” Vargas (3-5-1) after six rounds of welterweight boxing, which featured clean and methodical work by Torres, answered infrequently by Vargas. The judges ruled unanimously 60-53 for Torres.
Edgar Zubia (2-0-1 of Hobbs, NM) won by TKO against Antonio “Tone” Martinez (1-1-1 of Espanola, NM) at 2:37 of round 2.
Matthew Baca (1-0) knocked out Daniel Gonzales (0-1) at 2:59 of the 1st round, both fighters making their professional debut.
Cristian Cabral (1-0) and Shaun “Warrior” Henson (0-1) made their pro debuts also, and after 4 rounds, Cabral won by majority decision.
Brandi “Babi Doll” Montoya (1-2) faced Tonia “TNT” Cravens (2-7-2), and after losing the 1st round, Montoya came back and won the next 3, winning by unanimous decision.
Leonardo Sanchez (1-0) and Devon “Little Tyson” Sermons (0-1) also made their professional boxing debut, with Sanchez winning by unanimous decision.
Yoel Gonzales (1-0) made his professional debut against Antonio Garcia (1-1) and after four rounds, all three judges rules 38-36 in favor of Gonzales.
