Coleman Scott Heads to Olympics - US Combat Sports

Las week Coleman Scott earned the final spot to be filled at the 60 kg/ 132-pound weight class for the United States Olympic wrestling team at "The Grapple in the Big Apple" put on by Beat The Streets. Scott earned an opportunity to earn the final spot on the wrestling roster after winning the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in April 21-22.

Since Shawn Bunch of United States earned a spot for America by taking third at an Olympic Qualifier in China, and Scott won the U.S. Team Trials, they were required to wrestle off for the final roster spot.

Scott, hailing from Stillwater, Oklahoma (Sunkist Kids) defeated Shawn Bunch of Columbus, Ohio (Gator WC), twice out of three matches, sending him to London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Reece Humphrey squared off with Coleman Scott in a preliminary bout, which sent the winner into a best of three championship series. Scott defeated Humphrey in three periods of wrestling by a score of 1-0, 0-1, 1-0, sending Scott to wrestle off verse Shawn Bunch, an opponent he has never defeated in senior level freestyle wrestling.

In the first match Scott opened up right away earning a takedown from the clinch winning the first period. Bunch took back the second period by earning the solo point via step-out. In the match-deciding period, Scott earned an early takedown giving him a 1-0 advantage.

After a scramble on the line, Scott scored two points and added a third when Bunch's challenge was denied. Bunch attempted a desperation move with little time remaining, exposing his back, giving up another three points, which ended in a 7-0 technical fall.

In bout two, Scott won the first period again, after scoring a comeback takedown tying it 1-1, then won on final point. Bunch earned the win match win by winning the second and third periods by a takedown from a clinch and a push-out.

Scott earned his spot for the London Games by winning the third match in two periods. Scott won the ball draw and dragged Bunch to the mat from the clinch to win the first period. The second period, Coleman Scott pulled off a five-point throw that was decided after video replay. Any five-point throw ends the match.

Coleman Scott was greeted by his coaches as they bull rushed him in excitement, hugging Scott in front of a massive crowd in Times Square, New York.

Coleman Scott will represent the United States of America at the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. It was the first time Scott defeated Bunch in senior freestyle competition and he did so twice in front of a loud Olympic competitive crowd.
