On Saturday, August 6, Conan’s Kickboxing Academy out of Norman, Oklahoma put on a special benefit event entitled “Championship Kickboxing vs. Breast Cancer”.

The event was put into motion a few months ago after Conan’s Kickboxing Academy student Tiffany Gimmey lost her ex-mother-in-law to cancer. With the help of four time World Kickboxing campion Scott “Conan” Mincey her dream became reality and along the way she was able to pick up some hardware.

The event was set so that all proceeds from the event would benefit the Susan G. Komen and National Breast Cancer Foundations. The fight card featured 14 amateur kickboxing matched including the United States Muay Thai Association Tri-Regional Women’s Title. There were fighters representing a total of 13 different gyms.

The main event of the evening featured Tiffany Gimmey and Heather Cheatle. Up to this fight Gimmey had achieved a 3-0 record in kickboxing. Cheatle on the other hand had a 1-1-1 record. When the fight began it was clear that Gimmey was hungry to win the title.

Gimmey had noticeably better hands and flurried her opponent with devastating strikes. However, Cheatle did not give up or give in and continued to put up a fight. In the fifth round Gimmey came alive and the crowd rised to their feet as she tried to finish off a visibly battered Cheatle. In that round Gimmey landed some crowd pleasing spinning backfists that were just icing on the cake. The fight went the distance and Gimmey stood champion.

In the co-main event of the evening Ben Cottingham (8-1) of Gilkey Karate faced off against previously undefeated Kyle Thomas. Cottingham was the visibly taller opponent and his reach advantage came into play throughout the bout. The fight was much of a back and forth battle and several times the fight had to be stopped because of low blows. In the end Cottingham pulled out the decision win.

The night turned out to be win-win for Gimmey as she was able to capture the title and raise money for breast cancer. Despite warm temperatures due to broken down air conditioners, friends, family, and fans alike stuck it out to be part of supporting a great cause.
