Atlas Fights 12: Bobonis Outpoints Williams, Phillips Outlasts Bullard
Atlas Fights rocked the casino this past Saturday night with some of the best MMA action on the Gulf Coast. The main event was a professional 140-pound catch weight bout between Aaron "Yoda" Williams of Alan Belcher MMA Camp in Biloxi, Mississippi taking on Shah Bobonis from Champions Training center from Miami, Florida.
After putting on an incredibly intense battle between two champion caliber fighters, Bobonis emerged victorious earning a close split decision victory and his fifth win in a row.
The co-main event was between featherweight Cody Phillips of Capitao MMA of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida challenging John Bullard of Fighters Alley from Melborne, Florida. This was also another battle that lasted to the very end with Phillips earning the unanimous decision after three intense rounds.
Two other pro bouts were between featherweights Mike Roberts of Dog House MMA in Pensacola, Florida taking on Jason "The Kid" Knight. It was actually the first pro fight of the night and the pro debut of Roberts.
This fight had people on their feet with excitement as Roberts used a number of different elbow combinations. Short and incredible powerful jabs and elbows took Knight by surprise. Knight took blow after blow as the spinning reverse elbow of Roberts was unstoppable.
Roberts was on his game with leg kick and short powerful jabs and when that did not work and he felt he returned to the reverse elbow. This fight went the full three rounds and ended in a unanimous decision with Roberts coming out the victor. Knight clasped afterwards due to pure exhaustion.
In the welterweight division Lionel James of Capitao faced Randale Ward of Foley, Alabama. This was Ward's debut fight as a pro and he took this fight on only three days notice. The last time we saw Ward in the cage was at Strikehard Productions in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2010.
Ward has been in the gym training hard and did not hesitate to fight when called upon by Atlas Matchmaker and MMA Solutions. James ultimately won the battle late in the first by TKO. Ward said afterwards he may have lost the fight, but admitted it was awesome getting back in the cage and looks forward to the next fight.
In the battle over who would be the next Atlas Amateur Lightweight champion the current reigning champion Cameron Cochran of Capitao squared off with challenger Ryle Stous of Competition One out of Pensacola. Stous ultimately won by split decision at the end of the third and is the new Atlas lightweight title holder.
In the amateur division there were six fights with one standing out more than the other being what may be the controversy of the night when Brok Weaver won over Desmond Peterson in the second round.
The referee stopped the fight due to what he called too many unanswered blows 25-seconds into the second round. Paterson was stunned but not out of the game as he did drop his hands and was taking a few too many licks but was bobbing his head and still coherent.
When the referee stopped the fight Peterson immediately complained to the referee and the house was stunned. Peterson and his corner immediately filed a complaint, but as these things go, the fight was awarded to Weaver. There may be a rematch of this fight at the upcoming Atlas "War On The Shore" card in October 20.
