Mud Energy: A New Way To Energize, Maximize, and Sustain MMA...

The world's most unique form of supplemental energy may be extremely beneficial for the mixed martial artist in you, even if the idea did come from a diver.

Jeff Bonisa, an executive chef, avid waterman, rider and someone that likes to play hard, began his adventure in 2009 when he created Mud Energy Gel.

Bonisa, otherwise known as the "Mud Guy", wanted to create a product that would do three things for the user such as energize, maximize and sustain.

There are two different formulas for this mud mixture: the Dirt formula for high intensity workouts and one for Dive and Sea when you cannot have caffeine. Ginger is added to the dive and sea packets to help alleviate seasickness.

If you prefer not to include caffeine in your workout the Dive and Sea packets are perfectly safe for you even if you are not a diver.

Why is it called Mud?

Simply answer really: when you pack all the ingredients together it looks like mud.

As the base to all Mud Energy gels, Coconut water contains more than 50% concentration of potassium, which is perfect for electrolytic balance for our body.

Generally, a healthy helping of organic Brown Rice Syrup consists of approximately 50% soluble complex carbohydrates, 45% maltose and 3% glucose. Brown Rice Syrup is absorbed easily into our system, leaving lesser provision for fat accumulation.

Unlike simple sugars Brown Rice Syrup is complex sugar, which is dissolved easily in the bloodstream. In addition, the maltose and complex carbohydrates components of brown rice syrup takes more time to digest thus maintaining the energy flow for longer periods.

Guarana seeds hold as much as four to eight percent natural caffeine. This natural caffeine in Guarana is released slowly, thus sustaining the desired effects of increased energy. Guarana also contains trace amounts of theobromine and theophylline, and large amounts of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenes, and tannins. Guarana has been used traditionally to enhance mental sharpness and memory, and to increase energy and stamina. It may also help support the cardiovascular system.

Sustamine is an ingredient that works on multiple levels to help rehydrate the body and sustain energy levels during exertion. This unique dipeptide ingredient combines the amino acids L-Alanine and L-Glutamine to help your body rehydrate, replenish and recover no matter how hard you push it. Sustamine's is quickly and easily absorbed by the body, which means your muscles get the amino acids they need faster.

Lastly, Mud Energy's proprietary protein blend includes three protein sources, Brown Rice Protein, Hydrolyzed Collagen and a Whey Protein Isolate which are all made using a 100% natural process. Hydrolyzed Collagen peptide is a 100% natural and safe ingredient derived from proteins. Used worldwide, it has been scientifically found to improve overall joint mobility, bone structure and the natural beauty of skin.

So what does it taste like?

Mud Energy uses all natural fruit which has been selected at peak harvest times and includes no added color, no artificial sweeteners and less than 10-percent sugar, real vanilla beans, and dark chocolate and cocoa from one of the best chocolate sources available.

All the flavors that are available in the dirt or high intensity formula are also available in the Dive and Sea formulas. They include Chocolate Truffle Rage, Pomberry (Pomegranate Mixed Berry), Tai-Chee (Tangerine and Lychee), and Bango (Tropical Banana Mango)

Unique Packaging and Price

Rip it. Sip it. Clip it. Rip open the top, sip out the product and clip it to someplace convenient. The packaging was cleverly designed by Bonisa because he wanted something that he could easily grab and return to where he removed it while riding a bike, diving, or running.

Each case comes with a D-Ring or carabineer for those of you familiar with rock climbing. "I was sitting and my living room when I drew out the design. Mountain bike riders are always carrying gear. I wanted something I could clip to," Bonisa said.

The unique packaging helped Mud Energy become recognized in Packaging Digest Magazine.

"My wife was always getting upset with me for putting my dirty, sticky camelback hydration pack in the washing machine. My old energy gels would get stuck in my pack and in the washer so I needed to come up with something new, something I could clip on so I wouldn't forget it."

A carton of 12 packets of energy are available at for $36.48 Each carton comes with the carrying clip and stickers. Shirts are also available online. As of right now the only available flavor is Chocolate Truffle Rage.

For Use in MMA

Each packet gives the user roughly two hours of energy and will not leave you with a burning out sensation as the product wears off as some energy drinks or shots do. Also, you won't be trying compete with a full stomach. Most energy drinks require you to consume anywhere from eight to 24 ounces.

Take one packet before your activity and drink some water with it. Take another packet during your activity if you feel like you need another one to keep up the pace.

Anyone looking to increase your workout in any sport should seriously consider Mud Energy. If you are trying to work your way up to a championship bout consisting of five-five minute rounds you are going to need to burn a lot of calories to get there.
