Wheeler Comes Home to Cheers Despite Lackluster Performance
Saturday May 12th several Albuquerque fighters made their way to the Inn at the Mountain Gods on the Mescalero Apache reservation, High in the mountains of Ruidoso, to take part in the Mescalero Warrior Challenge 2. The fight promotion is a collaboration between Mescalero’s favorite son Coty “Ox” Wheeler and Jackson’s Gym General Manager Ricky Kottenstette. This was their second sold out show which provided exposure for several fighters from neighboring states alongside those from the 505.
In the main event Wheeler met a sharp and well prepared Freddie Lux of Tuscon, AZ. Wheeler unfortunately was not in his usual top form for this fight. Recently married and a full time student Wheeler found himself trying to shed thirty pounds in 48 hours to make weight, a daunting task that left him depleted. Wheeler, 24-6, as a pro fighter, made no excuses and gave a gutsy performance. Despite his immense courage and hard charging style he was unable to thwart Lux’s submission attempts and was forced to tap to a rear naked choke near the end of the first round.
In the co-main event Jacksons’s Nick Urso defeated the always tough Paco Castillo by Rear Naked Choke in the first round after a slugfest in the middle of the cage. Urso was one of several of Jackson’s teammates to come out victorious. The full results are as follows, pictures are available for viewing on the Photo Gallery page:
