Shalorus draws with Varner, Wineland defeats Campuzano at WEC 49

Kamal Shalorus (6-0-2) of Austin, Texas stepped up to the World Extreme Cagefighting's challenge on Sunday night: a main event bout against former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner (16-3-1). The result and lightweight fight itself, which took place at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was anything but definitive.

The former champ had a rough night, breaking his hand and foot during the match, and against Shalorus' head, according to Varner. Additionally, Varner caught three kicks to the groin, each one looking more uncomfortable than the next.

Despite losing a point for the repeated groin kicks, Shalorus broke even with Varner in what is surely one of the most controversial decisions this year.

Nelson Hamilton awarded a 29-27 score to Varner, Cameron Quwek gave the same score to Shalorus and Cecil People's turned in a score of 28-28.

Fellow Texan, Will Campuzano (7-2) of Dallas was outclassed by a former WEC champ on a mission in Eddie Wineland (17-6-1).

Campuzano was dropped twice in the first round, both times from a counter to Campuzano's low kicks.

In the second, Campuzano fell again after a three-punch combination found its mark. Campuzano somehow rose to his feet but a hard shot to the body and a finishing blow to the fallen Campuzano's head extended Wineland's win-streak to three.
mckenzieMcKenzie takes out SWC boss Sylvester

After Marcus Hicks was forced to bow out of his main event match up against Mike Bronzoulis due to a rib injury, Davis Sylvester (5-3), decided to headline his own show on Saturday night: Supreme Warrior Championship 11 at the Frisco Convention Center, in Frisco, Texas.

Oklahoma City's Lewis McKenzie (10-3) not only demonstrated superior striking but underlined the disparity in age between the bantamweights. McKenzie, who turned 25 the day before the event, is Sylvester's junior by 11 years.

The multiple takedowns Sylvester scored clearly took their toll on his stamina, leaving Sylvester vulnerable to McKenzie's quickness and agility. McKenzie got the better of a scramble in the second and maintained dominant position, firing strikes from above until the referee stopped the fight.
