Sam Alvey vs. Joe Riggs Set for ShoFIGHT 20 After Shonie Carter Withdraws Following Car Crash
A recent car crash has sent a "Diesel" on a collision course with Sam Alvey at ShoFIGHT 20 next month in Missouri.
Originally scheduled to square off against Shonie Carter before a car accident pulled "Mr. International" from the event, Alvey will now meet UFC veteran Joe Riggs on one of the more stacked cards to hit the Midwest in recent memory.
Despite the fact that neither Riggs nor Alvey have yet to reach the age of 30, both competitors already hold a world of experience. Combining to have 73 professional fights among them, "Smile'N Sam" and "Diesel" will compete on a card chocked full of notables including Karo Parisyan, Kendall Grove, and others.
Following a disappointing loss to Brandon Ropati in March that snapped back-to-back wins for Alvey, the Wisconsin-native bounced right back with a first round stoppage over Daniel Almeida a month later at Wreck MMA's "Road to Glory" event in Canada.
The win improved Alvey's record to 18-4, 1 NC, and added another respectable win to his resume. Since his Fight of the Year performance against Gerald Meerschaert in 2010, the Team Quest fighter has won seven of his last nine bouts including victories over Jason Guida, Karl Amoussou, and Eddie Larrea.
For the better part of a decade Riggs has put together a reputable career against some of the sport's most highly regarded competitors. Serving stints within organizations like the UFC and Strikeforce, "Diesel" has amassed a record of 35-14, 1 NC, and faced off against other top competitors such as Matt Hughes, Nick Diaz, and Diego Sanchez.
With heavy hands, a strong chin, and a world of experience belonging to both men, the middleweight showdown between Alvey and Riggs has all the makings of an entertaining slugfest and is another example of the quality matchups being scheduled within the ShoFIGHT organization.
