Madtown Throwdown: Sergio Pettis Remains Undefeated Following First Round Submission Over Mike Lindquist (VIDEO)
As the level of opponents improve for Sergio Pettis so do his performances. The Roufusport fighter continued his rapid rise up the bantamweight rankings on Saturday night with another first round finish over veteran Mike Lindquist at Madtown Throwdown “The Return” in Madison.
After shrugging off an early takedown attempt and then showcasing his ability to explode back to his feet following a scramble, “The Phenom” landed a high kick that ultimately broke the arm of Lindquist and cleared the path for an easy arm triangle submission just 103-seconds into the bout.
“I kicked his hand and he pulled it back so I knew he hurt,” Pettis told US Combat Sports. “Then I had an arm triangle in and he was hurt so he gave it up because he just wanted to get out so I finished the choke. It felt good.”
The victory, which raised his undefeated streak to three, marked the first time in Pettis’ professional career that he won via submission. His other two victories came in the form of head kick TKO.
“I felt good and I wish I could have done a little more on my feet because I like standing up but I got my first submission as a pro so that feels good.”
With three first round finishes under his belt Pettis is squarely on the path that manager Duke Roufus has planned. And while the 18-year-old fighter looks light years ahead of his age, he understands that there is still plenty of work to be done in order for him to achieve his ultimate goals within the sport.
“I’m just trying to keep getting better. This is what I love to do. I train hard for this so I can keep progressing into a better fighter so that when I get to the UFC I can be the most complete fighter I can be."
