White Trash on the Road
Unified Martial Arts Host Jon "White Trash" Friedland BJJ Seminar
Milwaukee is a spoiled city – few Midwestern cities have the luck to have even one BJJ black belt, much less two. Not to mention an actively competitive BJJ black belt, in the form of Jon “White Trash” Friedland; who sports a 20 and 6 MMA record, over 100 BJJ matches with almost 80 victories, and the title of 3-time Wisconsin’s “Most Technical Grappler.”
Instead of isolating himself on a pedestal of accolades and accomplishments, though, Friedland seems to pride himself on his accessibility: with a self-effacing demeanor and playfully deprecating nickname (“White Trash”), Friedland comes off more like an easy-going college buddy than a Pedro Sauer-trained black belt. This relaxed approached hasn’t hindered his career, however, and Friedland has become a widely known and respected character in the Midwestern BJJ/MMA arena. With affiliate schools popping up around the Milwaukee area, Friedland is quickly spreading the “White Trash” gospel through his particular brand of Neutral Ground Jiu-Jitsu. This Saturday (November 17th), Friedland will bring his skills (both on the mat and at the bar) to Unified Martial Arts in Fond du Lac (16 N. Brooke St. Fond du Lac WI 54935). UMA proprietors Jason and Mike try to make it down to Neutral Ground to train with Jon as much as possible, but are proud to host White Trash’s day-long seminar.
Although Friedland is an outspoken proponent of Milwaukee’s east side – a place he describes as “where people from all walks of life come together and it’s cool,” – Friedland says he enjoys doing seminars and even encourages his own students to travel and experience training with and competing against other students of other schools. Friedland is well-known in the area and a fixture at many local events, always on the mat coaching – if he isn’t in the ring/cage competing. As one of the premier fighters in the WI area, Friedland has held the number one contender spot in several organizations for several years now. He wants a little more, though, as he says, “I’ve been number 2 since about 2004, now, and I can’t be there forever. I’d rather be number nothing than number 2 forever.” Friedland has upcoming title shots in several organizations at 170lb, but will try his hand at cutting weight, and competing for Gladiators Fighting’s 155lb crown this spring. Friedland says he’s not exactly looking forward to the cut, as he’s always fought at 170, but in true White Trash fashion, is willing to give it a go.
