Henry Martinez To Make UFC Debut Against Matt Riddle at UFC 143 on Saturday
New Mexico native, Henry Martinez (8-1-0 of Jackson-WinkeljohnMMA) will be making his UFC debut this Saturday, February 4, at UFC 143, as a late replacement for Jorge Lopez, against UFC veteran Matt Riddle (5-3 out of Throwdown).
Riddle is the winner of TUF 7, and every pro fight he's had has been for the UFC; he comes in hungry for a win, having lost his last two fights, both by unanimous decision.
Martinez, however, who has not been knocked out or submitted as a professional fighter, goes into the match with a four-fight win streak, his most recent win coming by reverse triangle choke, just two weeks ago, at Jackson's MMA Series 7.
Martinez is a lifetime athlete, with a deep wrestling background, beginning at age three, when he wrestled for his father’s junior team in Espanola, NM. He continued to wrestle throughout elementary, middle and high school, at which time he also started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, at Alberto Crane’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy, in Santa Fe, NM.
He earned wrestling scholarships to attend Colby Community College and University of Oklahoma. Throughout his extensive grappling career, he has earned multiple titles in American wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
He currently holds a BJJ black belt under Renato Migliaccio who is himself a Ryan Gracie black belt under Tait Fletcher, founder and head trainer at Undisputed Fitness, where Martinez is also the primary Jiu Jitsu instructor.
Martinez has been a professional cagefighter since 2006, with a record of 8-1 (his only defeat coming by decision against Wilson Reis at Bellator 2 in April 2009) and winning his last four fights, two by TKO and two by submission. He holds his brown belt in Gaidojutsu, awarded by Greg Jackson, founder of that mixed martial art and head coach of Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA.
Although Martinez usually fights at 155-lb, he happily accepted the opportunity to make his welterweight debut at UFC 143. For more information on this event, go to www.ufc.com.
