Sportfight X Results: O'Brien Submits Gabin, Livingston...

Sportfight X, one of the Southeast's longest-running mixed martial arts promotions, returned to Alabama for their latest show this past Saturday at the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham's main event was between Daniel O'Brien of Triad Mixed Martial Arts (1-0) from Cullman, Alabama and Bellator, M1-Global and Elite XC Veteran Moyses Gabin (5-4) from Hollywood, Florida.

O'Brien entered the cage as a professional fighter with an impressive resume as the 2011 Pan-American Gold Medalist in B.J.J. Brown Belt Division and 2011 Pan American No-Gi Silver Medalist in Brown Belt Division. SportFight X stated it was hard to pair Daniel against just anyone as his experience put him in a different class. And it showed in his fight on Saturday night.

When the bell rang it did not take O'Brien long to shoot in and push Gabin against the cage. Eventually, both went to the ground as both fighters patiently worked their ground game as O'Brien was moving into position to get Gabin into a triangle. Gabin squeezed out once but when O'Brien went for it again, Gabin could not hang in there and tapped.

It looked as if Gabin had been in the dominant top control position but O'Briens jiu-jitsu was simply too good. O'Brien did exactly what he has trained for years and came out the victor. This was by all accounts an exciting ground matchup that culminated in another victory for O'Brien.

In the co-main event Stephen Wilhite, from Triad Mixed Martial Arts, came to the cage with a perfect 2-0 record and a grappling background taking on Chad Livingston (6-1) from Florida in the lightweight division. Livingston had recently won the Rise of the Warrior Featherweight Tournament that included the best of the best 145-pound amateur challengers from all across Florida.

This was Livingston's pro debut and he did not disappoint. Wilhite came out circling the cage throwing the first set of jabs and leg kicks but did not seem to faze Livingston. Livingston returned with a huge leg kick almost taking Wilhite down.

Wilhite stayed on his feet and continued on with his game plan when Livingston thru a huge blow knocking Wilhite back across the cage, following up with another leg sweep that once again almost took Wilhite down. Wilhite even got in a little revenge when he got a leg kick to Livingston and landed in his abs knocking Livingston back a little bit.

Round one was definitely a standup battle while starting off in round two the action switched to all ground with Livingston throwing some unbelievable powerful forearms and elbows cutting Wilhite's brow and lip. During the break between the second and third rounds the ring side physician came in to inspect the cuts.

All parties agreed to stop the fights and Livingston was awarded the win due to medical stoppage. Both combatants showed incredible professionalism and Livingston actually raised Wilhite's hands also in victory showing respect for his opponent.

Other notable professional bouts of the evening include Matt Ward's victory over Allen Little at 3: 49 in the first round via a Rear Naked Choke, Athony Retic earned a victory over Thomas Thompson via TKO due to strikes at 4:19 in the first round and Joshua Robertson had his hand raised over Brian Avery via a first round stoppage.

The most prominent fight of the night in the amateur division was between former Alabama football star and National Champion Eryk Anders from Champions Freestyle Fitness fight against Strikehard Title Belt Champion Nathan Gaylord of Hard Core Gym.

Anders entered the cage with an impressive 6-1 record while Gaylord entered with an incredible 7-0 record. This was an all out battle going the full duration with Anders coming out with the win via a Split Decision.
