Deontay Wilder Left Without Opponent as Kelvin Price Injures Rib, Search Ongoing for Opponent for August 4
Undefeated heavyweight boxing prospect Deontay Wilder had been set to take on Kelvin Price at the upcoming Golden Boy Promotions card in Mobile, Alabama on August 4. Unfortunately, Price suffered an injury to his rib during training and has been forced out of action.
"We were hopeful that it would be something that felt better in a day or two and the fight would be back on, but that's not the case and he pulled out of the fight," Wilder's trainer and co-manager Jay Deas said of the bout cancellation.
With only weeks remaining until the bout, Wilder and company are currently in search of a new opponent for the pride and joy of Tuscaloosa, but have yet to find any takers. As of Wednesday evening Rich Power (Michigan, 16-2), Jameel McCline (Florida 41-12-3), Fred Allen (Texas, 14-0-1) and Justin Jones (Texas, 15-0-1) have all declined to fight Wilder.
Deas said he hopes to have a new opponent lined up by the end of the week. "In the past, we've been searching for an opponent up until the day before the fight, so we'll get someone," he said. "It's part of the game. Approximately 20 percent of the fights that are made don't come to fruition due to injury and the nature of the training."
It is unknown at this time if Wilder will get another opponent but all hands are on deck looking for a worthy opponent. Early reports were that this was going to be picked up by Showtime After Dark Boxing, but it will instead be aired on FOX Sports Net. This will be a 10-round battle is Wilder gets an opponent and it will be Wilders fourth National Televised Fight.
With an unblemished record of 23-0, and all of his wins coming via knockout, Wilder is proving to be one of the most promising American heavyweight prospects in recent memory. It will be exciting to see the heights his career reaches when all said and done.
