Alabama Summer Spotlight Series: Recapping Alabama's Wi...

The month of June was a wild ride for Alabama's combative sports scene with its share of ups and down. From Deontay Wilder's successful title defense over Owen Beck to the state's first official event cancelation, here is what went down in Alabama throughout the month of June.

On June 23rd the first ever cancellation of a show by the Alabama Athletic Commission occurred, as the promoter was unable to fill the card with the required number of fights in accordance with the state guidelines. This was a rough beginning for new sanctioning body MMA Solutions that was recently authorized as the new sanctioning body of Alabama.

We also saw the first professional and amateur boxing event at The Killer Buzz Arena in Tuscaloosa predominantly know for MMA events. Olympic Medalist Deontay Wilder came away with his 23rd straight win to begin his career. Other pro winners included Gundrick King, Keandrea Leatherwood and Ray Ray Bryant.

The month also witnessed the first show by Todd Owens' TKO promotion. Plagued with a multitude of issues, TKO still came out on top with a decent showing for its first event of 2012. Owens likely wished he would have had a better turnout but as he continues to grow in 2012 expect big things from Owens and TKO.

On June 9th Strikehard Productions brought their show back to the Killer Buzz Arena in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in the form of SHP 17. With UFC veteran Sean Sherk in the building, SHP crowned a new light heavyweight champion in Nathan Gaylord. SHP 17 brought with it the third ISKA Event Director and the fifth doctor of the year.

June also saw Alabama fighter Aaron Parrish head to Tennessee for his pro debut. Unfortunately for Parrish he lost his first pro fight in the first round. But knowing Aaron this will only make him more determined to come back even stronger.
