College Wrestling Spotlight: Iowa Travels to Nebraska for Top Ten Showdown
The Iowa Hawkeyes look to rebound after falling short to the number two ranked team in the nation Oklahoma State. After splitting ten matches with the Cowboys on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd, the top two teams in the nation were tied at 16-16.
However, the Cowboys outscored the Hawkeyes 54-51 in match points giving them the edge by criteria, 17-16. This snapped Iowa’s 84-dual unbeaten streak.
On Friday January 13, 2012 second-ranked Iowa travels to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the ninth ranked Cornhuskers for Alumni Night. Nebraska remains unbeaten this season in duals, and is coming off an 18-16 upset victory over the sixth team in the nation Ohio State University.
Nebraska’s seventh-ranked Jake Sueflohn at 141 scored a major decision for the Huskers with a 10-2 victory over number six Hunter Stieber of Ohio State. The true freshman from Arrowhead High School in Wisconsin has defeated five ranked opponents this season improving his record to 16-3 on the year. Sueflohn’s victory along with Senior Tucker Lane’s dominant decision victory over #Peter Capone (17th) at heavyweight, lead to the upset over Big Ten foe Ohio State University.
As head coach Tom Brands takes his second ranked Hawkeyes into a red sea of hostile Husker fans, they will hope to rebound from their non-conference loss. The huskers will have a tall task ahead of them as the tradition of Iowa wrestling continues with seven wrestlers ranked that are the top ten in the nation. Iowa’s two-time national finalist and one –time champion junior Matt McDonough will look to take charge as he will square off against unranked Shawn Nagel at the 125-pound weight class.
Heavyweights senior Tucker Lane (seventh) of Nebraska and freshmen Bobby Telford (eighth) will also meet on Friday night with the potential of lifting wrestling fans out of their seats. Lane is coming off of an impressive victory against Ohio State, which helped boast the Huskers to and upset win. Telford on the other hand is coming off a tough major decision lose. Telford lost to Cowboys Alan Gelogaev 10-2.
At 133 second-ranked Tony Ramos will go toe to toe with junior Ridge Kiley. Kiley fell short last Friday vs. Ohio State by decision 6-2. Ridge will be looking to get back in the winning circle with a victory over a high spirited Tony Ramos. The sophomore Ramos earned an upset victory Saturday night against the regaining national champion Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State. Both wrestlers will most likely come out on the attack shooting for legs trying to get their offense going early.
The most anticipated match of the night will have to be at 141. The senior Montell Marion of Iowa will dual against the true freshman Jake Sueflohn of Nebraska. Marion is the third ranked wrestler in the 141 weight class. Sueflohn has climbed his way early in his career to the sixth ranked spot in the nation. With beating five ranked wrestlers already this season, the freshman looks to improve that statistic to six as his opponent plans to add a fourth lose to Jake’s record.
As the Hawkeyes enter the NU coliseum they will see a crowd covered in red as the Cornhuskers faithful will be there supporting their team on alumni night. Be sure to see a pack coliseum as Nebraska looks to remain undefeated and continue their best start in school history. Expect that Tom Brands’ wrestlers will come out prepared looking to start another winning streak that competes with their 84-dual unbeaten streak. This is the meet of the week as two Big Ten teams face off which could possibly decide the conference title.
Expect two teams that will fight for every match point. There will more than likely be hard earned takedowns that require second and third efforts for a finish to hear the referee raise their hand for two. Standups will be explosive off the whistle making riding time a factor in each match. Anticipate seeing each wrestler leave their blood, sweat, and tears out of the mat as everyone will be giving 110 percent effort.
