The Problem With Self Defense: Superheroes Part 2
In the last installment of the Problem with Self Defense editorial series, I started to discuss the recent surge in discussion over the Real Life Superhero trend in New York. Last week, HBO aired a documentary called Superheroes following members of the recent phenomenon of private citizens dressing in costumes to engage in everything from from charity work to vigilante justice. Among the groups featured in the documentary is a make-shift team of Avengers who operate out of the New York boroughs known as the NY Initiative. Judo, once the most practiced Japanese art to come to the west, has not seen quite the same gain in traction from MMA practicioners. Master Eugene Kim, a Judo instructor at Kim’s Martial Arts and Fitness in Freedom, Pennsylvania, seeks to bring this fighting form back to the top where it once was. -

Yesterday, Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting broke the news that the new iteration of MMA promotion company Pro Elite will be holding a show in New Jersey this November. Further, there are plans for the November show to include the start of its own Pro Elite Heavyweight Grand Prix, a tournament modeled after the recent Strikeforce Grand Prix, which in turn heralded back to the Pride era. Given that the former Pro Elite management, and their MMA product Elite XC, failed so spectacularly on the public stage in 2008, analysts and fans have been highly skeptical of the defunct company's reappearance. -

This Saturday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, former Ring of Combat champion and top Mid-Atlantic prospect Costas Phillippou will see his first Pay Per View appearance in the UFC as he faces off against veteran fan favorite Jorge Rivera. Phillippou, who lost his first bout in the UFC against another Ring of Combat alum Nick Catone, was fit into the card as a short-notice replacement for an injured Alessio Sakara. Rivera and the UFC 133 main card represent the biggest opportunity in Phillippou's burgeoning career. But, as a huge odds-on underdog, the question remains as to whether he can make the most of the chance or if he's being brought in to lose to a popular personality.
