  • Grapplefest VII Proves a Smooth Success

Grapplers of all ages, sizes and skills filled the gymnasium at the Sue Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho on Saturday, October 20, for the 2012 Southwest Grappling Championships. Although many things remained the same for this event, there were a few new features. For the first time, divisions were given specific start and end times, and the universally-agreed result was that everything went much more smoothly, as evidenced by completion of the event prior to sun-down, a first for the tournament, for which attendance was actually up from last year. "I think this is due to the schools staffing (wrestling team) stepping up," noted an appreciative Dave Friedlander, promoter of the...
  • Sam Alvey's TUF Blog: Another Bad Judging Decision and Why Roy Nelson is a Bad Coach

So in the latest episode, Episode 6 "Return of the "Big ol" Jedi" the show started with a recap of last weeks fight and it showed Big Country informing Nick that he lost because he didn't listen to him. Team Big Country was just starting to get upset about the coaching style of their leaders and it was apparent it was starting to bug everyone. Then once again it went to Secor picking fights with the other team and this time it was the shirtless wonder, the Canadian sensation, the thunder from down under (the north pole) Mike Hill. It was fun watching the show this week because none of us knew who stole that chicken until now. Apparently it wasn't Mike but he s...
  • Rumble in Rio 9: Cops Beat Firefighters Ironically Going 9-1-1 Over Night

For the second time in its history, Rumble in Rio was won by the "boys in blue" of New Mexico's Law Enforcement, with an ironic finishing score of 9-1-1 (9 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw) against New Mexico's Firefighters. The "Rumble in Rio" is a non-profit promotion, which raises money for the "Jim Franklin Bike Give-Away Program" and other youth charities, including this year, the addition of "Children's Cancer Fund of NM". Each year, Fire faces Law, not only to raise funds for charity, but also for bragging rights on which public service is the toughest in the state. Historically, the firefighters have held sway over the event, winning 4 tim...

  • Sam Alvey's TUF Blog: The Fart Heard Around The World

So this week was episode five "The Empire (of Carwin) Strikes Back" and it really had no lack of action. The episode started with a brief overview of how last weeks fight went with Julian explaining how he feels right now, and to his credit he really was upset that he lost. Everyone in the house kind of overlooked him as being a threat but he did some real damage to Bristol and was truly shook up that he lost. Then Flash Forward another day it has Julian getting really upset with Secor. When you take a hot head like Julian and put him in a house with a mouth like Secor you know it will get Rough, and this episode was just the tip of the iceberg. For the rest of the season we refe...
  • 2012 Southwest Grappling Championship Set For October 20th in New Mexico

Where did this year go? The trees are yellow, the NFL is already in week six, and here in New Mexico the smell of roasting green chile can be found lingering in the air. For Jiu-Jitsu fighters around the Southwest, fall also brings the Combat Sports Club’s final tournament of the year. The 2012 Southwest Grappling Championship is scheduled for October 20th at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. This is a double elimination tournament, placing first through fourth, awarding huge, Olympic style medals. All KID (non-medaling) competitors receive a participation medal for their hard work. Join grapplers from New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado and beyond. This is also the last op...
  • Sam Alvey's TUF Blog: Marunde Gets Team Carwin Back on Top, Movie Night, and Sleeping in Bed Again

So it has been one week since my minor setback by the hands (or foot) of Joey Rivera. Fear not, this smiling guy is back in action for episode four (“A New Hope - For Carwin’s Team”). The episode starts off with Dana treating the house to a movie night. He bought us popcorn and everything! The little twist of this sequence is that we actually did not see the movie until after the Bristol/Julian fight. Yours truly got a little screen time testifying how good the movie was. Let me tell you, I actually really enjoyed the movie Here Comes the BOOM. I don’t expect it to win any Academy Awards, but if you are looking for a few laughs or something to entertain the kids, then it gets 3.5 out of 5 ...

  • Sam Alvey's TUF 16 Blog: Magny Beats Camacho, Secor-Lane Rivalry, Pranks

Episode two aired on Saturday night it showed a lot of fun things including the budding of a relationship between Matt Secor and Julian Lane. The whole fight started when Julian started making fun of Secor and his fight to get into the house, which would make perfect sense on a show about fighting. But what didn't make sense was that it was Julian that started this fight. Secor's fight to get into the house didn't go to decision, he fished his fight in the third round, Julian's fight went the distance to a decision victory that Dana White was making fun of ringside. The whole fight was about 15-minutes long and it consisted of Julian constantly talking about how Secor h...
  • Wrestling Technique Spotlight: Sprawling To Defend A Takedown

Once the 2012 London Games ended wrestlers everywhere have the desire to learn how to perform a blast double like the Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs. But he has more than a great double leg takedown. He has excellent defense against the same shot that he is known so well for. In wrestling, knowing how to defend a shot is just as important as being able to successfully complete one. There are a couple of lines of defense that will help avoid an opponent getting deep on their shot. When in the neutral stance, be sure not to reach with the same arm as your lead leg. Reach with the non-lead leg arm. Hands, head, and hips are your first three lines of defense against a shot. Hands to pu...
