Marine Corps Takes a Hit in Ending UFC Deal
****The author is a Marine Corps veteran and actually served under Maj. John Caldwell who is cited in this article. The author's opinions are not that of the Marine Corps and have no official endorsement by either the Marine Corps or the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It is purely a matter of personal opinion shared by a Marine Corps veteran and journalist for U.S. Combat Sports**** All good things must come to an end. And in the case of one of the most recognizable partnerships inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship's Octagon, the U.S. Marine Corps and the UFC have officially cut ties. The three-year partnership between the two came to an abrupt halt November 30 after a push... -

USCS Wrestling Technique Spotlight: How to Perform The Slide-By and Improve Your Wrestling Repertoire
Wrestling season is upon us as conference duals and rivalry matches start coming together before the holiday. And while the possible outcomes are endless, one thing for certain is there will be a winner and a loser. As matches start forming and takedowns become harder, technique becomes crucial to success. A fairly simple move I really enjoyed during my high school and college career was a slide-by. This can be used at all weights in wrestling, as many people have this thought in their minds that they're "big guy" moves and "small guys" moves. I never believe that to be true and never will. A skilled wrestler can perform any skill he or she desires. It takes dedicat... -
Fire and Ice: Holly Holm Earns Decision Over Diana Prazak, Montes Leaves on Stretcher
On Friday, December 7th Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm faced power punching Aussie Diana Prazak, delivering a flawless performance en route to a unanimous decision. Coming into the fight with an 11-1 record, seven by knockout, Prazak was undeniably a legitimate threat. Having recently avenged her knockout loss to Anne Mathis, it begged the question: would Holm employ the same stick and move strategy against Prazak. In the lead up press conference coach Mike Winklejohn spoke of Holm's evolution into a power puncher and finisher. These improvements were evident each time Holm stepped in and fired. She felt Prazak's power but stayed on the offense, more than on the run. -
Holly Holm vs. Diana Prazak Headlines Fresquez Productions 'Fire and Ice'
It's hard to believe it's been a year already since Holly Holm was knocked out by power punching Frenchwoman Anne Sophie Mathis. Since then, Holm celebrated her marriage and avenged the loss to Mathis with a brilliantly executed performance in May. Holm, who has only suffered two losses in her illustrious career to 31 wins, now sits poised to round out 2012 with another win this week against Diana Prazak. This Friday, Holm takes on Prazak (11-1, 7 KO), of Australia in another Fresquez promotion titled Fire and Ice. At today's press conference Prazak showed the attitude of a confident challenger. She has been training for three weeks here in Albuquerque to acclimate to the al... -
Jackson’s MMA Series X: Leyva Falls to Birchak, Padilla and Justus Victorious
To explain how much former Marine and MMA fighter Matt Leyva is beloved by family, friends and fans is to explain how deafening the silence seemed after Leyva was dispatched by Anthony Birchak in the main event of Jackson's MMA Series X. After a minute and a half of frenetic exchanges on the feet and the canvas, Leyva was caught by a well-placed straight from Birchak at 1:22 of the first round. While disappointing, the loss for Leyva should serve as lesson and happens to the best on their way up. Big ups to Nick Urso in the co-main that should've been but wasn't, his opponent came in 15-pounds over. Did he forget what weight he was fighting at? I was looking forward to seein... -
Sam Alvey's TUF Blog: Mike Ricci and Jon Manley Earn Victories
Hello again to everyone that reads these wonderfully written, behind the Ultimate Fighter scenes exclusives with me Smile'N Sam Alvey. This week's episode led off with the two nicest guys in the house squaring off in the octagon Jon Manly and Joe Rivera. Let me tell you, both of these guys really didn't want to fight each other. Jon had a ton of respect for Joey, and Joey knew how good Jon's ground game was, and this led to a fight that Dana was not to impressed with but Jon did pull out the win and will be moving onto the semi finals. The build up for the fight between the Canadians was a little bigger and the fight a little faster paced. Hill and Ricci were "budd... -
USCS Rising Star Spotlight: Team Jackson-Winkeljohn Flyweight Nick Urso
Nick Urso will be stepping into the cage as the co-main event at Jackson's MMA Series X, this Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, NM. This will be his second professional fight at 135-lbs, as he faces Silver City's David Ruelas (1-1). Originally from Chicago, IL, Urso (4-1 of Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA) and his family moved to Florida when he was still a teenager. Already accustomed to being the smallest in any of his classes, Urso had been taught how to defend himself by his father, well versed in old-school boxing and kickboxing, "my father is very knowledgeable, and doesn't train by conventional methods", who drilled it into him from ... -
Heather Jo Clark Looks to Break into Strawweight Top 10 Rankings with a Victory Over Stephanie Eggink
"Hurricane" Heather Jo Clark made her debut in the strawweight division at XFC 18 against Avery Vilche with a first round submission win via Rear-Naked Choke. The move down from 125 pounds went as planned, and Clark felt comfortable enough with the weight cut to make the full time move to 115 pounds. After climbing her way into the top 10 ranked female fighters at 125 pounds, Clark will look to do the same in her new division. Clark has only been involved in mixed martial arts for a few years and already seen great success inside the cage, under the Jacksons MMA team. After a decision loss in her pro debut, Clark moved on to earn four straight wins including a 10 second knock out...
