Madtown Throwdown 27: Sick of Being Overlooked, Bobby Galvan Prepares to Steal Andrew Trace's Spotlight
Madtown Throwdown 27 is set to take place on April 28 and will feature four of Wisconsin's best welterweights in single elimination tournament with the overall winner receiving the Madtown welterweight championship. Fighters within the tournament include Lenny Nelson, Andrew Trace, Eddie Larrea, and Bobby Galvan. Galvan, who formerly trained out of the now defunct Agallar Combative Systems, sees the competition as an opportunity to finally grab the spotlight. Having posted a strong record of 8-3 to this pont, Galvan has stayed out of the cage since his last fight in July of 2011. J.R. Briones Discusses Facing Jordan Suefzer for Heavyweight Title At Wisconsin Fighting Championship
On Feb. 11, JR Briones will enter the cage as the co-main event to his teammate James Baber of Waukesha MMA. Briones (5-2) will take on foe Jordan Seufzer (3-2) who fights out of Juneau, Wisconsin on Team Buck, for the Wisconsin Fighting Championships heavyweight title. Briones brings his kickboxing background into the rematch with Seufzer on Saturday night. Gerald Meerschaert Poised for Big Return After Rocky 2011
By his own admission the past year was a forgettable one for Gerald Meerschaert. Following a brilliant 2010 campaign that saw him take home Combat USA gold as well as Wisconsin's Fighter of the Year Award, "The Machine" suffered setbacks in and out of the cage throughout 2011. But after opening the new year with an impressive kickboxing victory over Whisper Goodman at the latest Combat USA show, Meerschaert plans on reasserting his dominance within mixed martial arts by rededicating his focus as well as making the move back to the welterweight division. -
James Barber In Search of Second Straight Title Against Erik Flannigan at Wisconsin Fighting Championship
In less than a week James “Lil Iceman” Barber will face Erik Flannigan for the Wisconsin Fighting Championship lightweight title. And according to Barber’s Waukesha MMA coach Reese Shaner, hard work could be the deciding factor when the two meet in Milwaukee on February 11. Barber is a native of Illinois and was a three-sport high school athlete before attending Carroll University where he participated on the football and baseball team. The amateur fighter began training mixed martial arts roughly three years ago, but injuries during college sports forced him to take time off. After healing, Barber returned to the cage earning the Sheboygan Showdown title over Billy Paape in January. -

In less than two weeks at Milwaukee Harley-Davidson the Wisconsin Fighting Championship will showcase some of the state’s top up-and-coming amateur fighters. One competitor hoping to impress is Roufusport’s Elias Garcia who looks to stay undefeated when he meets MMAG’s Kevin Burke. Garcia, who hails from Anaheim, California, was always a fan of mixed martial arts. However, his original plan centered upon furthering his wrestling career at a junior college rather than stepping into the cage. But plans can change in an instant. -
Highland Fight Systems' Miguel Luis Balances College Wrestling and Amateur MMA
Sitting alongside his teammates listening to music through his headphones en route down Interstate 43, amateur mixed martial artist Miguel Luis took time to talk to US Combat Sports about his in-season wrestling and MMA career that will be underway again in the near future. The Illinois native attends Lakeland College located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and is in his final semester of college wrestling eligibility. Luis is the returning Northern Athletics Conference Champion with eyes focused on goals of “becoming a national champion”. The Muskies’ conference champion has been participating in the sport since his freshman year in high school. -

As the 2012 Summer Olympics from London draw ever closer, man’s oldest sport begins its quest of filling the Olympic team. This year the USA Olympic wrestling team trials will be held in Iowa City, Iowa on April 21-222 where the United States will figure out which young Americans will earn the great honor of representing their country in the London games. One young American hoping to fulfill his goal of becoming a United States Olympic wrestler is Obenson Blanc. Blanc, one of many young wrestlers with the potential of going to London, earned a spot on Team USA at the 55-kilogram Freestyle weight class after winning the world team trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa. -
Combat USA: Goodman Predicts Another Win Over Meerschaert
Familiar opponents square off tomorrow night in Green Bay when Gerald Meerschaert and Whisper Goodman rematch upon Combat USA’s kickboxing event. Goodman, a 30-fight veteran out of Unified Martial Arts, needed only 88-seconds to defeat Meerschaert last April en route to capturing Wisconsin’s 185-pound crown within Combat USA. Eric Schafer Prepared for Jorge Rivera's Tricks at UFC on FX 1 in Nashville
In less than two weeks Wisconsin’s fighting standout Eric “Red” Schafer will make his state-record ninth appearance within the Ultimate Fighting Championship when he meets Jorge Rivera at “UFC on FX – Guillard vs. Miller” in Nashville, Tennessee. Schafer, who has competed off and on within the UFC for the better part of five years, will likely need to pull out a victory against Rivera if he hopes to reach double-digit appearances under Dana White’s flagship. Standing in the way of Schafer will be the 39-year-old “El Conquistador”. Rivera will be making his fifteenth appearance in the Octagon and allows Schafer to come into a matchup as the younger of the two fighters. -

What a wild ride it has been for Sam Alvey over the past six months. From two polarizing split decisions within Bellator to the destruction of Mexico’s undefeated prospect Salvador Augusto Montano, the Wisconsin brawler returns to his roots at Madtown Throwdown to meet fellow veteran Eddie Larrea.
