With the growth and recognition of the sport comes the media coverage to help move along and support MMA and its steady progression. Whether it is websites like ours or magazines such as “Ultimate MMA” they all have something special to offer.
For $5.99 you can purchase your own copy of “Ultimate MMA” the Magazine in almost any store that has a magazine isle. The specific issue I will be reviewing is Volume 10, Issue 3 featuring Anderson Silva as the “Fighter of the Year.”

As I began to open and read I found one great thing about this issue specifically. With the exception of the ads I was wanting to read every page. All of the titles did a great job of catching my attention and the article itself did a better job of holding it. There were several well written articles on just about anything you can imagine. Whether it was a featured Jiu-Jitsu fighter or someone to look out for in the MMA scene, all of the commentary on the subject kept me hooked.

I was really captivated by something you don’t see very much of anymore as well about half way through the magazine. It was a piece written called, “Street Wise” which specifically focused on self-defense in real life situations. It was a well placed vacation from the typical material most magazines which would drown you with such as another add or a full page picture of someone’s face getting knocked inward.

Perhaps the best feature of the magazine is that it was delightfully interactive using quizzes or who said this type of guessing games. The writers went about this very subtly at the bottom of pages where smaller articles are written, but put enough emphases so that they catch your attention. I am more impressed with each turn of the page.

But, with all of the positive there must be some negative. The only disappointment was within the main article itself about Anderson Silva. It was short and seemed lackluster. It was much more of a recap of what he has done than getting to the story behind the fighter which is what I was expecting. However, I pass over that article viewing it as only a minor speed bump in what is otherwise and excellent read.

Maybe you are a MMA master but you haven’t quite reached that MMA Guru status yet. Well, a good consistent reading of “Ultimate MMA” the magazine may help you along the path to to MMA knowledge greatness. It is one of the very few I have picked up and read page after page with only skipping minimal material such as advertisements. So, if you have a little spare change and happen to be by the magazine article, reach for this one and engage yourself in learning a little MMA 101 as you read through it!
